In my own opinion the problem is that this post is controversial.... No matter if Frode post was well intentioned or not.... I dont think personaly he ment to cause offence.... It will always bring up mixed feelings.

I thought Frodes insight was good because that is what we are trying to find out... Are TG´s racist.....

Often once some nice black guys have been met the stereotype is broken.. I have said it before but I have 2 mates who regularly come here from london who are black.. It's unsurprising that a TG would be uncomfortable with the word 'racist' as it represents an unpleasant side to human nature and Thais are brought up to keep such concepts out of sight, especially from outsiders, and rather not even think about them. The ubiquitous Thai smile may well signal a genuine easy-going nature, resulting at least in part from the same upbringing that buries concepts like racism beneath the surface. However, the same smile can also be seen as a front behind which all the usual human feelings and reactions are broiling away. There are many tales on this forum, and elsewhere, of incidents where smiling Thais have been pushed beyond breaking point and, unlike Farangs who tend to ramp up their rage in increments, when Thais snap they snap big time. Anger, bigotry, jealousy, fear etc. are concepts that are embarrassing to think about let alone discuss with a Farang.

I'm uncomfortable with the way the word ignorance is bandied around in this discussion. It's use is often quite pejorative, whereas ignorance can be a good thing. I delight in my almost complete ignorance about the World Cup and dearly wish to maintain it. Thai rice farmers are ignorant of the problems currently facing the UK Home Office - why should they be otherwise? You can only condemn someone for being ignorant when they deliberately choose to maintain their ignorance in the face of necessity.

Such abstinence brings us to the definition of bigotry: "Obstinate and unenlightened attachment to a particular creed, opinion, system, or party." Ignorance is the natural initial condition of mankind, it is bigotry that causes one to obstinately maintain it.

Frode does not mention, nor can we infer from the single character snapshot he presents, whether his TG is learning and growing as she is exposed, gently, to new and mixed cultures. I hope she is.

I think that maybe you are confusing victim complex with rebellios child syndrome. Grantly they do overlap in numerous manners but the *victim* usually wallows in its own self pity(which I do know people like this OF ALL RACES) while the rebellious teen tends to go against the system they find themselves whether it is helpful or not. And earlier in this post it was discussed about the attractiveness of this rebellious nature on other societies. But as always, this is only my opinion.

Well, as LIL said "Norway is not exactly a hotbed of multiculturalism", and I have to agree with that. Maybe not the country you first choose if you want to live in a multicultured society. The city we live in has about 240.000 inhabitants, and many of the foreigners who are here are english, americans, polish and swedes. But there are also immigrants from africa, the middle east and asia.

She started at school in January for learning norwegian, but she didn't like it because there were so many people there from arabian/african countries. She said that they (guys) was looking at her all the time and sometimes tried to talk/flirt with her, and she didn't like that. She had only stayed here for about 7 months then, and I told her that she could go back to school when she had been here a bit longer and she felt more confident. (She will be back at school in september)

To me, the most important thing has been to integrate her in the norwegian society and the way we live here. She is doing great at work, she has a lot of new friends there, and she even got some of her tg-friends a job in the same place (well, she is married to the manager :embrassed ).

I would say that everything is like I was hoping for at this time, and we can only look forward and focus on new things that is important for her (and me) to learn, or should I say discover?

I am sometimes astonished, how people banging Thai girls, do also have some racist ideas. I saw on this board more stupid postings then this, and yes the search-bottom, could be used more often, but you can say that of many, many treads. I have read several times now, in the few months I am posting here, negativism towards French people. Well eat this, we are very good in our skin towards se*uality, and we are at least open about it.
