Ok i'm new to all this..i've only been licensed since august. I'm wanting to add warm rice packs to my massages. I've made one but when i warm it up it always smells like rice. What did i do wrong?? What is the best way to do this, make my own or buy them. I don't think i want to sell them (unless i have requests for them) i just think it would be nice to have one for the eyes, neck and then a large one for the back. Any suggestions would be great!! Can you get/make something with a scent to it, to mask the rice smell? I do think this is why some opt for flax or buckwheat (do they use buckwheat anymore?); and/or add "aromatherapeutic herbs" to the filling. Of course, if you add herbs or scents, you have to be careful in case your client is allergic to something (just a simple disclosure of the ingredients would suffice, I'd think).

I like the "rice" smell. For some reason those packs always smell like warm bread to me.

I'd think a little lavender might help if you want something "foo-foo".

you used rice! hehehe - just my opinion but you should for sure use flax seed. it's waaaaaaaayyyyy better! just my opinion of course. you can get it for super cheap at health food stores.

I love the smell of flax seed with some lavender and little hint of mint. I find it to be a very comforting scent.

Spa universe sells some great heat packs. You can put it in the microwave or what I do is keep it in a hot towel cabby. Clienst love it!

Here's our supplier: http://www.warmhugs.com - It's a small company, locally owned and operated. We know the woman who started and ran Warm Hugs the first 16 years, and we know the woman who runs it now. Margie has, if anything, improved upon the past.

Today she stopped by to restock us - we're anticipating another run on corn bags leading up to Valentine's Day. We talked about the bags a bit. Today she told me more about the 2-seforum.xxxe filtration process at the farm where the corn is grown, plus the storage and drying process used to attain the optimal moisture content. Too dry and you don't get the moist heat, too wet and it gets smelly. She filters it all again before approving it for use in the corn bags, so you don't get broken kernals - this facilitates longevity and a better smell.

Our flax packs come from another supplier, http://www.specialessentials.com - very reliable and comfortable, but our corn bags are more popular.

If you are looking for another source of unscented heat packs, check out http://www.mooremedical.com their packs last for a half hour, if not a little more and aren't filled with grains, so they don't smell. I use both the ones from Moore Medical and other ones that do have a light scent and are made with grain, those I order from http://www.soulagetherapy.com (they're really nice and big with some comfy weight on them).

How do you make them? I have always wanted to make one but am not very creative? Like do you just sew a little pouch with the rice/flax in it or do you make one little pouch and then do like mother earth does and have a removeable shell? I ordered one from Mother Earth today and its on the way but I wanted to maybe look into saving some money! Let me know!

Well i made one as just like a test to see how it went. I made a sleeve with and opening in the top. Then put in about 1 cup of rice and then put a stitch above that to keep the rice in that section and continued to do that until the sleeve was fulled and sewed it shut. I did it that way so all the rice wasn't falling to one end or another. Then i made a nicer sleeve out of flannel to put the rice sleeve in. Does that make sense. Then i heat up the rice sleeve and put it in the flannel sleeve. This way i only have to wash the outer sleeve. I just made a neck one. I want to do a better neck one, an eye one, and a back one. But i just haven't gotten that far yet. Hope that helps

How do you make them?

The most simple way is to take a tube sock and fill it with 2 cups of whatever you are using. Tie a knot about a hand-width further from the "filler" so there is some room for it to spread out. Then, sew a slip on cover, which is open on both ends (this makes it easier to get the cover on and off).

I've done this in the past for the rice packs I have at home. Piece of cake to make, and they fit perfectly around the neck!

I use rice packs Actually I use rice, rock salt and fennel rice packs. The fennel seems to cover up the rice smell when they are relatively new and when it looses it's scent, the rice is usually not smelling anymore. The rock salt keeps it all moving well. I can't remember the ratio, something like 2:1:1.
