At a presentation on the disease hosted Tuesday by the Aspen Institute in Washington, Nancy Messonnier, an official with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, noted that only a few of the 13 U.S. patients required oxygen during convalescence.

“All the patients in the U.S. haven’t required tons of excessive care and actually, right now, they’re actually all improving,” said Messonnier, director of the CDC’s National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. “Based on the U.S. experience, and based on the experience of other countries outside China, a lot of these patients seem to be doing okay.”

Schaffner also noted that in China, where the vast majority of deaths and illnesses from the “covid-19” disease have occurred, air pollution and a higher smoking prevalence may contribute to the severity of the disease.

Many experts have said early phases of outbreaks like this one tend to have a large number of severe cases, as the sickest people flock to hospitals and come to doctors’ attention. And in Wuhan, where the health-care system is overwhelmed, people have complained they cannot find a hospital to test them for the virus, let alone to treat their symptoms. So patients with milder versions may be at home, uncounted, waiting out the epidemic.

In its latest “situation report,” released Wednesday, the World Health Organization listed 45,171 confirmed cases in 25 countries including China, with just 441 of the cases outside China. The WHO classified 8,204 of the Chinese cases as severe, meaning virtually all the rest are mild.

Currently, the death rate of the disease is hovering around 2.5 percent, a remarkably high level, about the rate of the 1918 flu pandemic that killed roughly 50 million people around the world. Normal seasonal flu kills less than one-tenth of one percent of people who contract the virus.

But experts have said the coronavirus fatality rate is likely to decline substantially as they compile a more accurate count of the people who contract the virus and survive. At the Aspen Institute presentation, Anthony S. Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, said he hoped the rate could decline toward 1 percent.

Either figure makes the virus much less deadly than severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), which killed more than 9 percent of the people who contracted it in 2003, and Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS), which kills nearly 35 percent of its victims.

So the chances of anyone catching it here are currently very low, but if you were somehow incredibly unlucky enough to catch it that could pretty much happen anywhere, not just your local spa.

And even in really unlikely event that you did get sick, your chances of not recovering appear likely be somewhat similar to not recovering from the flu, a permanent risk which nevertheless doesn't generate anywhere near the same level of hysteria.

Well said. We are in Canada and nothing to get so paranoid about. It is flu season, Just be a bit more careful about where you go, who you meet and wash your hands quite often. I am more worried about getting hit by a car or stray bullets in some neighborhoods.
I went around a few spas yesterday. Full service spa businesses are down about 50-60%. Even the spa girls are screening their Chinese clients and refusing to see some who they suspect recently came back from China. Semi legit spas in Richmond Hill are doing fine even though business is down about 10-15 %. My go to semi legit spa in Richmond Hill is still busy as usual. I worked there on Monday and some guys had to wait more than half hr to get a girl. Yesterday one guy came in around 5 pm and he was so upset when the cute receptionist told him no one available till 6 pm. They were fully booked till closing time. Suko is also doing okay and so is Serene Ocean.
The restaurants in Richmond Hill are busy as usual. I always have a hard time getting a parking spot at Commerce gate plaza during lunch and dinner hours this whole week. The busiest restaurant is the Nam Vietnamese restaurant at 16th and Leslie where I have to wait a few minutes every time I go there.

Why the coronavirus cases spiked overnight
On Thursday, officials in Hubei province — the epicenter of China’s outbreak — added more than 14,000 new coronavirus cases to their tally. That was the single biggest increase in cases recorded in one day. The province’s death count also surged to 1,310, with 242 new deaths.
But, Ryan said, “This is an artifact of the reporting,” — not a sign that the outbreak is spreading faster or further.

So what does this mean?

Early on in an epidemic of a new disease, it’s not unusual for health officials to shift the definition of what they consider an official case as they learn about the disease or as they grapple with the resources they have to find and diagnose cases.

And that’s exactly what happened here. In Hubei province, health officials essentially broadened the definition of what could be counted as a case on February 12. They decided trained medical professionals could classify a suspected case of Covid-19 as a confirmed one, based on findings in chest imaging and a doctor’s analysis.
In other words, a lab result was no longer necessary to consider a case confirmed. The change was made to speed up the finding of new cases, National Health Commission spokesman Mi Feng said, according to the AP. And it comes at a moment when hospitals in Hubei are overrun, and medical equipment is in short supply.

The 14,000 new cases weren’t even new, Ryan added: They were older cases reclassified based on the new definition.

What % of reported infected people have died from this? 2.3%. What % of people die from the flu vs reported cases in an average year? 2.6% You realize the the Novel Coronavirus means New Coronavirus.
