I heard that the Balinese still hold on to their soft nature, and it is the non-Balinese (migrating from Java,so I heard) that has 'ruined' the real Balinese atmosphere in Bali.

But I also believe, there are some bad eggs in Balinese themselves, and combined by non-locals bad nature, it changes Bali to worse nowadays.

I heard that the governor of the island has threatened to disintegrate from Indonesia if Bali is forced to enforce some of Shariah (Islamic) law there. Manado (North Sulawesi) also did the same thing.

eur11, We were actually planning on going back to Bali but the airlines are making it pretty hard to get there which is why we are going to Thailand.

I thought the Balinese sense of humour was the best.

We were walking down a small lane way when a shopkeeper asked me if the young girl with was my daughter (which she was) and then asked if I wanted a Balinese son-in-law. This cracked me up but the look on my 14 year old was priceless.

Checked out Flightcentre and Jetstar and some other travel agents. After reading about jetstar's not so great service on balitravelforum but I found most meant going via Sydney or Melbourne.

I chase to cheap packages and just extend the return flight then find your own accom for the balance. Stayed in Seminyak in a 2 bedromm villa with our own pool and housekeeper for ten days, cheaper then a hotel/resort when taking the family.

There's a place called Pankor Laot (or Laouk)-Emerald Bay in the Straits of Malacca,that looks worth a visit.Think it belongs to Malaysia.That whole area looks idyllic to me,and maybe a better option for land ownership than Thailand or Indo...

no worries duke!

yes, i am permanent resident but on tourist visa as my business is internet based and i cannot get working permit so easy but still possible if you have connections.
i think malaysia is much more farang friendly for investing money and visa matters, yes.
you get tourist visa on arrival for free and can stay 3 months. i do this 4,5 years already, no problems ever. you can also do the "malaysia my second home" program. i think you have to deposit about 200 000 ringit (2 million baht) in a bank here then you can stay forever without visa runs.
for me it's no problem at all to leave every 3 months (phuket only 1 hour flight) and airasia has it's hub here...
buy property also no problem. i think only rule is that prop has to be worth more than 200 000 ringit (45 000 euros) but not sure bout that.
well, the downside here is the high price of alcohol and not so many working girls than thai. the p4p scene is no comparison to los, of course. well, i just took indonesian lady from beach club last night---nice!!! but more expensive (2500 baht) i also feel that thai people are more friendly and smile more than here. in general thai is more fun!

i really like TG's a lot but here you can get malay, indian, chinese, philipinas, indonesian...
KL is not as stressful as bangkok. traffic still ok.
food is way better than thai.
but to be honest, i think about moving to other country as i get a bit bored after 4 years here

I'm not that fussy and would be quite 'happy' with either in the pic.... I would like to go to Indonesia. Looks like a hell of a place to visit... I would prefer to do Cambodia first tho.... After that I will definatly consider Indonesia.

Pitty about the north taht nobody goes too. Lovina Beach is beautiful, quite afew spots where nobody goes - you can have streches of beach to your self. And over on Lombok - if you like to surf, take the Boogie Board (with or with out party acessories) cus you will find great break. Lombok locals are la very high perceneforum.xxxe muslum, so they will leave the waves for you, but they will 'spit' on you if you walk past them, so yeh - I don't go to Bali or lombok any more, Might go back in a few years to check it out again, but I found Thailand, just so much better, especially the FOOD!

Marine park is what you mean I guess? Bunaken is meant to be great diving, but there is another place if you're around that area: the Togean islands. They're in Tomini Bay, the big bay surrounded by North Sulawesi. The diving is awesome, and you stay on a remote island with very few facilities - it's not for all but we spent six months there running the diving for one of the resorts and thought it was beautiful. Power is on generators so only on from 6pm to about 10:30pm, no internet, no landline phones, mobile reception just appeared when we were there almost a year ago. It's a real desert island destination. The diving is at least as good as Bunaken, with fewer people getting in your way and great viz most of the time. Also great for losing weight as the diet is fish and rice We both shed about 10 kg in six months... no junk food or munchies.

Everyone says the people in Manado are the most beautiful in Indonesia, I've heard ot from the locals as well as from westerners And yes, as sad as it may sound, I too felt safer there just because it's mostly Christian. Not that westerners are usually targeted but even so, Central Sulawesi made me a little nervous.

I'd like to go back sometime and 'do' Lombok, the Gilis, Komodo, Papua... but we'll see if/when we have a chance.

Yes, if you are more into seeing the scenery and 'low profile' night life, there are quite a few places in Indonesia you can visit, apart from Bali.


Lombok is beautiful, and yes, just watch out for the population is Moslem majority.




Whoa! You know more than I do, in this case! I went to Manado once, and only for 2 nights. I have some friends there who showed me around in between my hectic work schedule.
