More and more schools keep price and schedule information off their websites and literature. Some schools state that tuition and schedule information is available as a supplement to the catalog and can obtained by visiting the school.

ABMP's recent survey had the 'average' tuition at slightly below $11/hour. However, as some of the larger schools charge $12,000 - $14,000 for a 750-hour program, I wonder how the average tuition can really be less than at 11/hour.

Just to form an understanding of going rates, would you mind sharing the following:

- when did you attend massage therapy school?
- how many hours was/is the program?
- how much was tuition?
- did it include books/supplies? if not, how much were books and supplies?
- did your school offer federal financial aid/grants?
- was the school in a prime (downtown) location?

1. Ten years ago.
2. 650 hours
3. $5000.00
4. That included the price of books as well, table, bolster & tablewarmer.
5. My school did offer financial aid/grants, however I did not qualify.
(Appparently I'd earned just over the limit the previous year.)
6. The school was located on the edge of town on a fairly busy street.
(It was on a nice corner lot though, and even reachable via city bus.)

1. Just graduated in May
2. Program was 750, although many in my class (including myself) finished with more.
3. Tuition was about $2500 for certificate, $3200 for AAS Degree
4. Did not include books or supplies. Books were probably about $350 total, Uniforms $20 each. Linens and one bottle of lotion were supplied until you were able to purchase your own. You were required to have your own table by some point in the program, however tables at the school were provided for you. Cadaver lab, attendance to Bodyworlds, and one day of NMT seminar was included in tuition. We were required prior to starting the program to have several other "health" things completed, such as CPR cert, updated shots, TB titer, Hep vaccine, drug test, and FBI clearance cards. Luckily my health insurance covered everything but the drug test, and my employer paid for the CPR training so the only thing I had to shell out for was the clearance card and drug test. I'm sure others in my class were not so lucky!

Four years ago.
750 hours plus 60 hours of clinics and 20 hours of offsite chair massage
$7500.
Did not include books, supplies, table, linens. Books were close to $500. We were not required to purchase a table, but did have to supply our linens & lubes. There was a dress code but no uniform.
Financial aid & grants were available.
The location of the school was an easily accessible city location.

I am going in the fall, and the place I am planning on going does the following:

at least 600hrs (cannot remember exact number)
14k: Everything included except lotions I believe but do not quote me on the lotions. I know that the chair, uniforms and other stuff is included. (Even books)
They do offer financial aid but I already had a degree so all my stuff was loans
It is in a downtown location.

I am graduating August 2nd.
570 Hours
Total Tuition: $225.00 (I kid you not. Community College.)
Insurance was included. Books and supplies were not.
Books and Supplies: $1000.00 including table, linens, oils, books.
No financial aid was available.
School was in a run-down refurbished government-funded day care center in the worst part of town.



Let me just tell you - I've learned the basics, but I've longed for one of the "fancier" schools many, many times over the past year!

Two year program- I finished a little over a year ago
900 in school hours plus two sessions per week as homework.
$14,000
Did not include books (300-400), table (500), or supplies. Did include some awesome instructors and classes.
Fed. Aid and grants- no scholarships
It was accessible by public transit and in a decent location

Hmmmm I'm thinking it was somewhere in the $2,000-2,500 range.

It included all books and most supplies but not tables.

Yes and I qualified for a student loan so that helped.

***It is in Southfield, MI which is about 15-20 minutes away from Detroit (the closest major downtown city). Great location though, close to home.

I can't believe $12,000 for massage school! That's insane!!

$12000? Honey I know kids going to some of the private massage schools here paying upwards of $16k to $20k for their "education".

I can only hope that someday Therapeutic Massage will evolve into a bachelors degree just as other medical/health professions have.

I have been to several colleges/universities. MT school ($14k for two years plus all expenses) was neither the most nor the least expensive, however, it was the most focused, most student-centered, most individualized, most challenging, most educationally aware school I have attended. - Graduated February 2003
- 610 hours
- $6500
- Included books, most of which the curriculum did not utilize:x, a t-shirt and oil holster & 1 bottle of oil
- no financial aids or grants, pay out of pocket or take out your own loan
-school was just off business district in a suburban area

NY school:
- Graduated May 2007
- 2 years (associates degree)
- $8500 before loans, $13,000 after
- Included nada, nothing, zilch, a big goose egg
- a state school so yes on federal loans/aid
- very conveniently located in busy area of upstate NY

2004, January to July
300 hours (250 classroom, 50 internship)
Tuition was $2250 (I know they've gone up since, as they were some of the least expensive I saw--most were about $2500-$2800.) However, that was tuition only, not books or supplies.
Aid offered: crappy Sallie Mae loans (which I never took part in). And no matter how accredited they were, they did NOT qualify for Stafford-type student loans thru the Federal gov't.
School was in a decent, convenient location, near a semi-uppity inner-ring suburb (though it wasn't too far away from some not-so-uppity parts, if you know what I mean )

Since we only paid for the 250 classroom (our intern massages at $30/hr unpaid to us), we averaged out to $9/hr.

The advanced CEU workshop classes were anywhere from $12-15/hr (the longer the class, the closer to $12), but I think all have since gone to $15 no matter what the class length.
