I woke up a couple of hours ago, did a quick check of the CNN News website and found out that President Donald Trump and his wife Melania have tested positive for COVID-19. My first reaction was one of schadenfreude, a German word for taking pleasure in the misfortune of others. This man who has so much power and influence but has done so little while so many have suffered and died, now faces the possibility of real consequences for his indifference and irresponsibility. A few minutes ago, I read of the well wishes made by some of Trump’s harshest critics. Some of this is of course insincere moral posturing, but it did induce in me a little shame. I am not religious, but my Catholic upbringing does influence my morality – we are all children of God, hate sin but love the sinner, be the bigger person. I am not there yet.

The idealistic part of me hopes that Trump has a lesson in humility and compassion and brings America to a better place with him. The cynical part of me thinks he will again double down on every stupid stance he has taken and find a way to foist all responsibility on political rivals and China.

Boris Johnson is arguably a more low-key version of DT. After he recovered from COVID, he did jack shit to improve material conditions for chronically overworked, underpaid, underequipped NHS staff. And his Tories passed a law that prevented gatherings that didn't take place in commercial establishments. I am not so optimistic.

No chance of any personal reform for this evil little spoiled rich kid bully. He has always fully deserved the most horrific fate possible, and we should not be cheated from seeing him suffer as his actions and statements over the last three decades merit. If only for the ads he took out in 1989, he should have a horrible death.

We'll see how he handles it. If he recovers without any real symptoms, he may double down even further on COVID being no real reason to shut it all down. If he has serious troubles while recovering, it might change his whole attitude towards COVID and humanize his image, which would probably be good for his re-election.

The best thing about it is that if he loses now he can blame it on Coronavirus and not on mail in ballots or some other BS conspiracy theory that raises doubts about the legitimacy of the election results. That's the scenario where his craziest followers are most likely to get violent and start a civil war.

Its better for his ego if he can blame this on an "act of God" rather than that he lost because he's a terrible president who has alienated genuine conservatives because they fear for the future of the Republic under him.

Then again, he still knows that if he loses the presidency he can be tried for all of his crimes and have to repay all of the taxes he owed the government. So he'll probably still stir up his followers no matter what.

But if there's no doubt about Democrat win, Biden will control the US military who could easily put down a MAGA rebellion. Whatever your politics, it's probably better for the guy who sees Civil War as a bad thing to control the tanks and nukes.

As for Trump, i agree with everyone here. However, I fear he will win again just as he did in 2016. As one Republican pundit said on CNN last week, the polls don't matter because a large portion of Trump supporters do not admit publicly they vote for him, but in the sanctity of the voting booth they will. He was uber confident that Trump will win easily and his logic is sound. Sigh.
