I was wondering if this whole SARS thing is keeping you out of the MP's

I know I still live my life the same as I always have, but I have been busy with work and have had no time to go anyways.

But I wonder.... If I could go....Would I???

Perhaps one should think about SARS this way:

Presently in Toronto, the stat (thru the media) tells us that of those contracted the virus - SARS cases, overall chance of dying from it (within a few weeks) is a bit below 10%, say about 8%. If one is old, or have other illnesses, chance of death is much higher than 10% and those who are young and healthy, much lower than 10%. But those who are young and healthy otherwise might have recovered from being critically ill. I happen to know of close associate who went through that but (luckily), escaped death - would you consider this no problem?

When was the last time anyone put himself/herself engage in a situation where they face a 8% chance of death within a few weeks? (Non SARS examples include movie stunts, drunk driving etc)

What is your accepted level of risk?

What about chance of contracting SARS?

Very high in Toronto hospitals

Low in general public places

Being in contact with someone once suspected of SARS - unknown ???
Just ask yourself - Would you allow yourself to get in close contact with someone who just came out of voluntary quarantine because of suspicious contact with a case - at home, at work?

Perhaps one should also factor in the # of actual SARS cases in Ontario, relative to the population of Toronto and all surrounding areas. Then factor out the females, as they generally do not hobby and most likely those males under a certain age do not either. Then ponder the chances of one of those remaining males who has contracted SARS or another male, who may have been in contact with them being an actual "hobbyist", at all. Then factor in the chance of one of us seeing the very same MPA this more than likely non existent hobbyist saw.

Simplified, I know, and there are other alternate factors, but also just as remote.

Don't spend any money on SARS, its nothing more than a flu bug that turned deadly.

Pool is very conservative in his calculation. He only factored in Ontario's population. If one factors in the world's population, the overall chance of getting SARS is virtually zero. Why is WHO so aggressive in trying to put SARS under control?

Is pool, our mathematical genius, mocking these officials?

Many play high stake lotteries despite chance of winning being exceedingly low. But if one wins, the payout (millions of dolloars) is overwhelming. The winner will be the sole winner because it will not multiply.

The chance of contracting SARS is low for most (except our front line health care workers) Torontonian (even lower for Ontarians overall - thanks to pool). But if you get it, the consequence can be disastrous. The difference is, you can still spread it to more people, and those who got it from you can spread it further. Pool, care to do the math for us?

I agree with Roadrunner. There was an article in Hong Kong (I think) that indicated that a tenant of a 300 unit apartment complex had SARS and infected all tenants in the apartment complex - they think because of his diareha traveling through the sewer pipes that connected the apartment rooms that somehow the sewer gas leaked through the toilet seals in each apartment and infected the tenant with infectious SARS. hmmmmmmmm cross out public toilets - -what's next - stop breathing?

Thanks for expanding on my post, although I don't know what's with the pompous attitude. If I'm not mistaken you were proposing the question, as to the chance of contracting SARS

I was only theorising as a balance to the paranoia, with what I believe to be relatively realistic, especially given that we all know the majority of cases within Ontario, are in Toronto. I didn't think I needed to spell out every possible conceivable angle and variable. I'm fully aware that the risk is there and of the potential outcome in contracting it. If anything, my concern would be in passing it onto others, over contracting it myself, because as you say, I'm invincible.

The threat is real and no doubt serious, but it is not unreasonable to continue life as I always have, at this point.

Thanks for making your position on this more transparent in your latest post. I missed the wit in your original one.

SARS has been discussed in several earlier threads. I responded to this one only because I sensed complacency on some of the opinions expressed here that made me nervous (just my personal view). I myself am no sophisticated mathematician, nor do I have the kind of talent and wit you possess to make my post entertaining and informative at the same time.

There will also be people who over react to the SARS situation and people who under react. At the end, I don't think anyone really tried to answer the question in the starting post. Care to give it a crack?

Being living in the States, we have it easier, but SARS stopped me from coming to GTA and staying at my parents home.....they told me DON"T COME !!!! Wife won't let me go either.

I am more concern about how a MPA or SP feel about seeing an Asian client....Bu then, the mask, gloves and a nurse uniform could be interesting.

I can say that SARS I think is overblown up to a point. I think if it was left unchecked, the shit would be in the fan, but it didn't happen that way and I think a month from now they will have a handle on things. West Nile is a far bigger threat...260 plus cases in Toronto alone according to the weekend SUN...You guys just have to make your own decisions...being broke has made mine for me..
