Increased prices in Patong?

I've been reading alot about patong prices being higher than those in Pattaya for example.

Is it prices on everything which are higher or just general things like bar fines, bar girls and drinks etc.

Also is it possible to avoid these over inflated prices for example.

I'm going in low season. If there is less people about they won't be upping their prices. I assume going to an empty bar and being firm that 1,000bt is your limit for lt. Will get you a bar girl etc?

If you are indeed an unattractive cheap looser, then you most likely are going to do well when you are the only choice and there is pure desperation in the air. I suggest you try and time your visit to arrive just after the next natural disaster, epidemic, or political upheaval to max your limited spending power. Clearly fun is of little importance.

It is wise to be planning ahead. Your cunning tactics will be appreciated.

1. Hotel prices can be a lot lower as you can negotiate.:beurk:

2. Bars and BGs tend to ask for a higher rates because they have less customers.h:

3. Patong never closes - even in low season bars are busy.:^^:

In Low Season...Patong on a Budget
Presuming you're arriving by air?..share the minibus from the airport to Patong (150baht) via a stop at an office where they'll try and flog you some expensive accomodation. Get dropped off in Nanai road and start doorknocking at the guesthouses...should get a fan room for 400baht a night...maybe even 350 if you plead with them.

Eat where you see the Thais eating...plateful of greencurry and rice; chickenrice; bowl of noodle soup...25 - 30baht.

Do whatever sh#gging you need to do in the daytime by walking round Loma Park near the beach and negotiating with the small brown ladies under the trees...500baht ST is common (so I've heard)....even 300 maybe if she's not a looker and her roomrent is due or it's time to send money to mama.

Don't succumb to the temptation of one of the 100s of massage girls because that will cost you 250baht just to have her pull and push you about for an hour...250baht is 8 meals at a Thai foodstall...and your budget probably wouldn't stretch to any sort of happy ending she may offer either.

Sit on your towel on the beach during the daytime and swim in the sea and burn your skin in the 30degree heat for FREE...it will cost you 100 baht if you want to park your botty on a sunbed.

At night to get some atmosphere, take a walk down to Bangla road...you will find some bars will sell you a beer for 50baht...30meters away another bar will be selling the same beer for 140baht....so shop around. Eat out for free at night by walking round until you find a bar festooned with balloons...where there's balloons there's usually free food....you can save more money by buying beer in a 7/11 for 30baht and walk round with it...as you pass the free food grab some on the way past and if challenged say "bai hong nam"...and keep walking.

I reckon using these moneysaving tips you could get your daily budget down to well under 1000baht...that's for everything....room; sh#g; food and entertainment.

I'm sure some other BMs will be along shortly with more moneysaving tips. I need to go off and remove from my tongue from my cheek.

Phuket on a budget...can be done.

Dont ring the bell, of course. I dont and even if someone else does, Im never tempted by the colorful ooze they concoct and pass around.

Nanai or one of the small hotels on Rathuthit Road ie opp Christin massage , the prices there are quite realistic...check out Sino House in the soi just opposite...great for 1400b per night.

Eat at no 6 restaurant opp C&N hotel, great food and cheap.

Dont pay bar all the time unless you see one you absolutely must have, get her no and hook up later. Or....go to Taipan, Tiger Disco, Safari Disco no bar, 1000b long time easy to manage. And never, ever tell them its your first time in Phuket/Thailand. But do say you've just arrived yesterday, unless you cant defend that statement, of course.

And while youre there treat yourself to a face massage at Hanako in Jung Ceylon....nice!

With all this budgeting, i still spent about 70-80K baht in 22 days...go figure

I find that businesses here in Patong always focus on increased prices to make more money and not business expansion. Bit of a shame as I think many will price themselves out of the market. Already this high season I have seen some places put prices up to crazy levels and then pull them back again after a somewhat harsh reaction. Many people however have been making issues of prices and saying it may or will affect their coming back and this can't be a good thing. Also in Thailand and many countries for that matter when somebody is on a good thing many will follow... mean why are there 6 million Tuk Tuk's? And pretty much to many everything With any luck the market with regulate and things will come back to fair pricing levels.

Why are people being so hard on someone trying to enjoy a vacation on limited funds? There's nothing wrong with taking the mini-bus from the airport instead of a cab, nor is there any lack of reasonable-priced hotels, especially during low season. For those who visit, who have a huge amount set aside for their holiday, great - nothing wrong with that. But for those who come with much less money at their disposal, it's still possible to have a great vacation.

The further you go away from "ground zero", the lower the prices get. Food that costs a certain amount in the middle of Patong is far less expensive if you get away from "downtown", and just as tasty. Spend all the time you want (or can afford) at the bars where a beer might be 140 baht, but the same beer is 30 baht at the nearby 7-11.

If you're a "party animal" and want to get into the swing of things, and can afford it, great! If that's not what you're after, Patong is still a lovely place to visit, and doesn't have to cost you a fortune.

The first thing you should do when you arrive is go find a copy of the book "Money Number One" which will explain to you quite simply what is going on. Reading that book should be obligatory for anyone visiting LOS. If you've got the time and desire, another great book is "Culture Shock, Thailand". The first book is invaluable for tourists - the second book helps you understand why things are as they are.

Try and do what YOU want to do, rather than what you get pushed into doing. As someone else put it, why should you spend your money doing things you don't want to do, with people you don't want to be with? It's your choice - find the places that YOU like, and that YOU can afford, and enjoy yourself. You can spend 1000 baht a day, or 10,000 baht a day. Only you can decide which is right for you, but even someone on a tight budget like the person who entered this discussion can still have a great time if he plans ahead and lives within his means.
