First Appt

I've got my first appt booked for acupuncture for digestive issues next week.

I'm not worried or scared about needles as I've had acupuncture for sports injuries before but I am a little worried about how I might be feeling afterwards and the next day when it's work being done on my stomach.

I had long distance Reiki sent to me once and the next day I felt terrible - headache, nausea, muscle pain, aches and chills. Will the acupuncture produce something similar and if so - how long would it last?

So what can I expect after the first treatment? Hope someone can help?

'sometimes things get worse before they get better' or so the saying goes. This is a good thing.
Don't worry about the treatment, acupuncture is very good and it will also depend on the practitioners diagnosis. I doubt you will have such an adverse reaction, as acupuncture is a very positive treatment.
If you are worried about the actual treatment being in the stomach area, most of the points for digestive problems are located elsewhere on the body.
I have my stomach needled regularly for energy work and its fine, just make sure you empty your bladder first

Acupuncture is one of the most effective therapies available and you should reap the benefits.

Not worried about the needles as I've had them for sports injuries and a TMJ problem so they were in my face - I'm more concerned about feeling "off" and "unwell" the next day - bit like when I had Reiki - felt chilled, sick, tired, achey, had diarrohea, headache which didn't wear off till about 5 pm - was fine the next day.

I'm having the treatment for constipation and bloating probs so does that mean that these two symptoms will get worse.

While I can't answer regarding acupuncture, or draw a comparison for you with Reiki, may I just answer your paragraph which I've highlighted here in respect of the Reiki treatment you received.

It is quite usual for a 'healing crisis' as some call it to occur following a Reiki treatment ... hands on or distance ... and is nothing to worry about. It is simply a clear out, which may be physical, mental and/or emotional. These side effects usually disappear quite quickly, especially if one drinks plenty of water to flush out any toxins. As you said in your later post, you felt fine the next day.

Did the person sending the Reiki not warn you of this possibility? They really should have done!

In Su-jok acupuncture the standard situation is improvement
the next day, though there can be smth unpleasant during the session itself - which can be avoided in "Neutro" schemes on fingers joints with several control points.

With regards to the Reiki - no they didn't but it was only one day and things improved greatly after that - they said they never knew anyone have such a response and I must be sensitive - which I am to everything.

Had to cancel my first appt but going on Tuesday - tomorrow - and she understands how I am very sensitive and has taken this into account.

dont worry, just make sure that you hydrate and relax for a couple days. I think you'll be pleasently surprised at the outcome.

Well as I'm so sensitive she had to give me a very gentle treatment - however - we had to stop half way through as I was feeling really sick. The needle that goes in the tummy and is for the spleen was like someone tying my tummy in knots, got cramps and pains. So we left it at that - however she did say she now knows how sensitive I am and can do it another way - needle in needle out - will make sense to some I guess!

But oh my legs are aching from the needles in the lower legs.

I only had the needles in about 5 mins because of the feeling sick and the one in my tummy felt like my stomach was being tied in a tight knot. However she will ring me in a couple of days and said I could have the "other" way of a needle in and a needle out instead of leaving them in - it's because I'm sensitive to everything - think after the first treatment and any aggravations I'd be find - just getting the first one over.

Will I have any good from 5 mins or too little time to do much?

Hi Janet,

5 minutes may be fine - sometimes needles only need to be in situ for a few seconds.
Did they achieve any needle sensation or were they manipulated at all while inserted?

And side effects should be minimal - but anything you experience after leaving the treatment room should be noted and told to the practitioner before the next treatment, so that they can adjust their point prescription accordingly.

Yes the one in my tummy after a minute or so I felt like it was going into a big knot - weird feeling but could feel it "tighten". The ones in my legs I felt the ache immediately and that lasted best part of the night on and off.

Last night before bed I was really cold and went to bed and woke at 3 am and couldn't go back off again. Also had the driest of throats - got up twice for drinks and got up with a sore throat today. Then this morning felt too hot - really hot and sweaty then that died off and I felt "cool" (know it's a bit cooler at the moment).

So any connection with the chill and sore throat almost like I was going down with a cold?

Quite possibly a connection.
It is possible that your practitioner stimulated the Yang in your body, due to a Yin deficiency - which could cause a temperature change - but any effect should be short lived - as it is simply your body helping to heal itself. Any effects should be noted though, as I said in my previous post, and reported to your practitioner next time.

If any points are particularly sensitive, make sure you tell your practitioner, so that they can find alternative points to use in future treatments.

Leg points can often be quite sensitive, as some are particularly powerful - a colleague of mine used to burst into tears every time one point was needled!!! Any feeling will probably diminish over the next couple of days - but if it is particularly uncomfortable, then please again, tell your practitioner next time, so that your points can be altered.

Temp seems to have settled down today but strange the legs ached terrible yesterday but were OK today but needles were put into my wrists yesterday and she was surprised that I was able to stand that with no ache - however got up this morning the legs weren't aching but the hands and wrists were.

Think as they weren't in more than 5 mins (which could have been enough for me as I'm so sensitive) things are settling down - although I still feel like I'm going down with a cold or sinus infection due to a headache for 5 days - maybe shouldn't have had the treatment in view of the headache but I'd cancelled 2 other appts because I was so nervous.

Was the headache not treated?
As something you are currently suffering, that would have been something which needed addressing there and then, IMO.
As for the wrist points - they can be very painful, and I am not in the least bit surprised that she was taken aback by your ease with those points - I personally dont like them - but they work - so they are worth the pain

Fingers crossed for your next session - and let us know how it goes and if your reactions change to the points - which I hope (and assume) they do, as your body starts to help itself.

No headache wasn't treated. Strange I felt the legs more than the wrists - even she was surprised too.

Still wish this muggy sinus headache would go though. Will keep you posted.
She said she would ring in a couple of days. Like to think I could manage the treatments and see what it does - it does get good reports. Just with me being sensitive I suffer more than most!

If you are really sensitive to the points, I would hope that your practitioner would use a mixture of modalities, such as acupressure, auricular acupuncture, cupping, gua sha etc - as well as acupuncture.
