Deliberately misquoting someone, misrepresenting an argument, and refusing to consider threats to the validity of your beliefs is hardly 'common sense', itself just an appeal to popularity. The SI article you didn't read also mentions the sub-4-minute mile, something that common sense held was impossible before Bannister did it. It's now an athletic standard. Should tell any honest person what so-called common sense is worth.
I don't think anyone argued that haggling isn't prevalent among Indians - it's normative pretty much everywhere outside Western Europe and North America. You're
