case study confusion

Hi i'm a bit confused about my ITEC IHM case studies - about what inf to put in them, but mostly because my tutor skipped over the written bits I need but said to put in lots of photos. Do I really need photos as my husband /friends dont really want to be photographed particularly?

Photos? For what purpose? You would need all sorts of permission from individuals before you could use their photographs - can't see that you can avoid facial photography for IHM and if I were a case study, I am afraid I would decline having my photograph taken.

Did your tutor mean pictures? As in graphics to 'pretty up' your case studies and fill them out???

There's no client confidentiality in photographs and isn't client confidentiality part of the 'code of ethics'???!!

Well when I got home I thought maybe she said photos but meant pictures but then remembered she said to make sure I didn't take the photos against a multi coloured wallpaper pattern so I'm pretty sure its photos. I see her again next week so I'll mention the confidentiality issue & opt out of photos because obviously someone else would have to take them and it would hardly be relaxing for either of us. Thanks for your help- I'll just try to make tons of notes till I find out exactly what I'm supposed to write in the case study

You do not have to put pictures in a ITEC case study! If you want to add extra stuff that is up to you. If you go to www.itecworld.co.uk click on Beauty, then click Indian Head massage, and you will find consultation forms which covers all what is necessary to do your case studies.

If you email/pm me, I can email you back the handout I give my IHM students to aid their case studies.

I had to have photos for my VTCT indian head, to prove I had actually done the case study. Speak to your parents/sister/brother/oh etc and ask if they mind you taking a couple of shots...

I have been through this with a Tutor who was asking for more than was required within the ITEC syllabus and got told if you don't do it my way you will not pass the course and when I phoned ITEC about this they declined to do anything about it

Some tutor's make these courses more complicated than they have to be I feel....

Yes, why do tutors make life so difficult!? Some tutors have some strange ways of interpeting what is often quite simple. Since ITEC doesn't ask for pictures, why should it be done. What VTCT does is their problem.

In my experience in teaching ITEC, the examiners seem to be far more interested in home care advice, potential contraindications and clients disclaimers, and reflective practice and so forth.

It's all very sad and unnecessary .

Are you sure they meant pictures of all your case studies? I had to put a picture of myself at the start of the case studies and a bit about myself, but pictures of others would surely be against data protection.

Can you double check it's not just a mug shot of yours truly that's required?

I have no idea but I am in the process of having Practitioner and Master Practitioner in Neuro Linguistic Programming certified by an accrediting body as a Level 3 and Level 4 course respectively, and trust me it's not going to be rocket science. I have been very prescriptive in the syllabus I have submitted and I actually withdrew my application from one awarding body becasue they wanted to meddle!!

Einstein said 'make everything as simple as possibel and no simpler!!' this makes sense to me but maybe I got it wrong

I want students to pass and enjoy the learning not have a fit becasue they need to produce 40 case studies.. I didn't have to work that hard on my PhD!!

It is unusual for a tutor to ask for photos to be included, as it does contravene data protection and confidentiality. Did the tutor provide you with a special disclaimer for this? Would she let you take photos of fellow students on the course to maintain confidentiality for your clients? I use photos to improve the quality of the handouts I provide students with, but would never ask them to photograph their clients - just think of the implications if treating a minor, with child protection etc!

Hi, I don't know about photos, but as to the other information - when I was doing my case studies, I included all feedback between treatments, comments about each client's response, whether they had made any changes to lifestyle, etc and my own observations when treating them.

Thanks for all your replies, I see my tutor next week and as itec dont require pictures I think I'll just put one in of me with everything set up and my uniform on etc Smiling of course- unless she insists and then it'll be of my husband as he has agreed (reluctantly). I was also told, that the photo of the client could just be a passport photo type to prove that the person existed if they weren't coming into class for a treatment to be undertaken that the tutor could see.

You need to clarify the situation with your own tutor.

And yes, VTCT and ITEC do have different requirements, but so do different tutors who are "apparently" running the same courses. From my understanding, the tutors usually write their own course materials and draw up their own expectations for their students...

What one is happy with is not necessarily what another is happy with, which was evident in my IHM class where I had two tutors who wanted different things and were even teaching different routines!

I didn't have to supply photos for my indian head massage certificate (IIHHT) but i did for my Beauty NVQ 2/3 facial & Body electrical case studies!!...if thats any help?
