Just my 2 cents as a non-expert fan : To win you need a balance of many factors and you deal from your surplus to address your weaknesses to try and achieve that balance. Offence, defence, goaltending, grit, leadership. It is a difficult balancing act however if you have too much of one and not enough of some of the others, you won't succeed.
All this to say for the Leafs.....way too many skilled offensive players and not enough players with grit and high compete levels. Deal from the excess to address the weakness to try to achieve championship balance. Nylander is excess skill and high salary cap, use him to get Chychrun and overall the team is better. Better to win 3-1 than to lose 6-4.
The goaltending....definitely a risky situation,
