Annoying flower sellers

Of course I've been there, and from my point of view, the conditions are just as bad as you pointed out. What you should do (if you haven't already) is go there with someone who actually DOES live there, and spend a few hours there. You'll find that what you and I call "terrible conditions" they accept as just "normal". What's "intolerable" to you and to me, is perfectly average to them, and their overall quality of life (as they see it) is better than what it used to be like back in Burma or whatever, because they're earning more money and being able to send some back home.


Yeah, don't buy the kids flowers - buy them food that they can eat right there. It will make a small dent in your wallet, it will put a big smile on their face (plus food in their tummy) and you won't be adding to the number of people exploiting kids by having them out on the streets selling stuff when they should be home asleep.

don't like bad attitude to any sellers / hawkers (EVEN tailors) just doing their job

..........And I guess I have a choice to either buy something or politely tell them "No thanks" with a smile and as yet have never had anyone trying to sell me something get annoyed or abusive.

When I see people getting annoyed or telling them to "fcuk off' it tells me something about that person! I bet you can guess what that is? Again, that's just me!

Agree it isn't right but I am unable to do much about it, they tried in Fagins time in London but the last time I was there I was still being acosted for my loose change and cigarettes and they didn't even come from England or offered me a bunch of flowers in return.

I can sit in various bars around Kamala and bump into the same person selling stuff several times over the night and they will still try to sell to me after several polite refusals..........But hardly an hardship is it!

As for the blind bloke with the music box in Kamala, he's done a pretty good job of ripping his own corneas out if he is faking it!

Remind me to take a piss in the horribly mangled old ladies cup at the next market...........should be good for a snigger or two.

Like I said before, if they get a small perceneforum.xxxe of what they earn or have to hand it over to parents, I am sure thier parents are including them in the meal they make with the bag of rice it buys them!

Anyway, back to 1K bar fines, 90 Baht bottles of Tiger and a Malibu Coke for the lady who wants 2K for a ST, Oh and I hope I wasn't ripped off for that wonky Viagra, the kids will be OK, they'll be back tomorrow night.........They have to!

Bangladiver, no one said it was a prerequisite to visit MTB, so no need to add extra words to my post, I just asked why he never went, but asked 3 times before he answered someone else??? seemed strange to me, that he activiely posts on a board but has no desire to meet any of the people, we do not spend all our time in the bar, we go shooting, go carting, water skiing, fishing, golfing etc etc and yet he never goes on any of them?? I just wondered why??

Last night J-mans bar tally in 2.5 hours was 15 flower girls, 6 wooden frong ladies, 2 old granny flower girls and 2 muai thai boxing guys ... not annoying; but kids age ranged 4-8 is sad to see.

A 6 year old in Patong sells flowers around Beach bar,dolphin bar, blue coral bar area. She's bright as a button, always well dressed, speaks very good english, and is quirky and cheeky. A smile from her can melt anyones heart, how can some of you tight arses not give anything and shoe them away is beyond me......

But its ok to rack up a 3k or 4k bar bill, there human beings and need to eat also you know.....

Oh i forgot to mention she's rarely beat at the nail game !!! :aww:

Denver needs to come up to my bar strip. two or 3 is fun!.
We had eight peddlers in the bar one night and there was only 3 customers.
So we did a count , 34 in under 2 hours, everyone in the bar helped counting on the whiteboard.
Most of the kiddies are nice for sure, but they just don't see creating a roundabout at the bar door p1sses people off.
By the way, give them money, mum takes it immediately.
Reminds me of the kids book Oliver Twist.
Hands up anyone who thinks a 6 year old should be out hawking at 2am. FFS.

Was thinking the same thing as some have said that they would not buy from or give money to the flower girls as the parents would take all the money.
What should one expect ... the kid making a couple of grand per month and having money to spend while the rest of the family goes hungry.
Maybe the 8 year old could treat the family for a dinner at the local diner.

Found those Muay Thai guys the most annoying of the hawkers. They'd have a little scrap for a minute or two then off on their rounds with the box and they'd go round the whole bar soi including to bars that if you sat at them you can't even see the boxing ring in the distance.

Dodger, the way I read the original post, it didn't say "in bars", and I assumed that "bar areas" meant Bangla Road. To me, bar areas means those parts of Patong Beach with lots of bars.

I've got no idea if the kiddies actually come into the bars - what I've been talking about all this time, is the kids walking up and down Bangla with flowers and whatever for sale. It's pretty hard to miss them. I never really thought about it much, but I'm surprised they're allowed to actually come into the bars to sell stuff.

At any rate, had this thread been about kids actually inside the bars, I probably wouldn't have responded as I did, as you're correct, I wouldn't know much about it. Maybe I mis-understood the wording, or maybe you did. I guess it could be taken either way.

I used to buy bunches of them and give them to my girl who would give them out to her mates who would leave them on the bar, she quickly realised that there was no benefit to her at all with the roses and would tell the sellers who approached me she did not like them so don't bother.

What I do object to is however the chap who walks around Soi 7 near to the eateries and beer garden at 4/5 a.m in the morning clutching a 4 month old or so baby asking for food I gave him 500 baht and he said he would go home to buy medicine etc...saw him ten minutes later still with the baby (yes I am a fool for giving it him) but what was interesting was my tgf's lack of compassion or interest she didn't bat an eyelid and i suppose that says it all the Thais make money in any way they can and there is no reason why they cannot use flowers,sex,babies or any method to make a few baht and it is seen as ok as long as nobody gets hurt, still very sad though.

Of course it shouldn't happen, thats obvious...... but hey this is Thailand and you, I or anyone else aint gonna change it, so accept it as it is or if it bothers you so much live somewhere else.

Maybe Chiang Mai is worse than Phuket mainly because the trinkets and hats all originate from CM in the first place...... as i said before it can be annoying but there's no point getting upset about it. Enjoy having the kids around they can be cute and funny moreso than some tourists who always look so miserable....
