First, Congratulations on graduating!

Sounds like you have a good place to start your career. That's great! As far as advice on negotiation, I'd like to know what they normally offer to start. You don't want to go in asking for something that is light years away from what they usually give. You want to be slightly aggressive but not laughable.

Also, keep in mind that you just graduated. Even if your massage is getting rave reviews they may be hesitant to offer too much because you lack experience in the field.

I'm not saying I would do anything like that, I'm very straight. But don't tell me males don't like getting massaged by attractive individuals. I'm a male and so are some of my massage therapist friends and it's clearly evident among us. I'm not saying it's good or bad, it is what it is.

On the last day of school, my teachers and some of us students were outside hanging out a little bit and just chatting. They said we should meet up again for a reunion sometime and jokingly said we'll see who's making the most money. I said that's not fair for the males. They said well aren't you going to be working in ___________ (place heavily populated with homosexuals)? Oh yeah....

So even my teachers know what's up.

I don't think this is wrong or anything, it's human nature. Women have been using their charm and looks since...forever. Bartenders are a great example and my mom who was a looker back in her day was able to make bigger tips and has no problem with it, and neither do I. And her looks probably got her the job in the first place.

Anyways they've never hired a MT before as a regular employee. They get MTs to come over from a spa near by. They have business friend who owns a spa and they made some sort of deal with them. Now they want a regular massage therapist employee.

It's really difficult to provide you with what would be considered a reasonable wage without knowing more details.

Would you be an employee or an IC? This makes a difference in the amount of taxes you would pay.

Who provides the equipment and supplies?

If you are asking for an hourly wage, what tasks would you be doing if you did not have a client scheduled?

What is the going rate for your area?

And as for the part about your looks....well, lets just say that I for one am extremely glad that my looks have nothing to do with my wages or tips!!!! I'd have gone broke a long time ago!!

It's one thing to joke with your teachers and classmates about and it's another thing to bring that to your private practice. It can be a slippery slope. For instance.....are you going to flirt with your clients in hopes that they will tip you more?

I'd rather build my clientelle through the awesomeness (is that even a word?) of my massage rather than my looks. Of course that's easy for me to say since my looks wouldn't get me very far these days.

They provide the equipment and supplies. All the clients are also guests so booking and stuff is done by front desk/owners. I would be an employee. Do you mean the going rate for massages or the going rate for wages? Massages are $70 for a 60 min relaxation massage and go up from there. Couples massages are really popular and those go from $150 to $290 depending on length of massage and deep tissue or relaxation.

I honestly don't know what they would want me to do there besides cleaning up after myself, changing sheets, and other reasonable common sense stuff.

They already have a guy there who just does cleaning, maintenance, front desk, and basically is an all around employee except he can't do massage.

I wouldn't flirt with my clients.

$10/hr plus 10-20% commission plus tips might be something normal. But I'd say anyone who is particularly good looking should ask for at least $20/hr plus 30-40% commission plus tips. Maybe even negotiate a higher commission for homosexual men or heterosexual women who rebook.

What do they pay the MTs from the spa? You probably wouldn't be able to get as much per hour as they do since you are hoping to get an hourly wage plus commission but this might give you a starting off place.

For instance, if they normally pay a 50% commission rate and the therapists normally do 4 massages a day, that would amount to $140/day (based on the $70/hr price.) If you are planning on being there for 8 hours a day and want $10/hr that would be $80 base wage. Then you add on a commission on 4 massages at 20% ($56) and you would be up to $136.

The B&B would have brought in $280 of which they would have paid you $136. This is almost 50% which is what we pay our employees. I would see this as reasonable if 4 massages a day is their "norm" and this is what they are acustom to paying.

If you are going to ask for an hourly wage, they might expect you to be working the entire time. You might want to be prepared to offer suggestions as to what you would be doing when not with a client, perhaps marketing or promoting massage to the guests??

First, eliminate the word "fair" from your vocabulary. Fairness is relative and by definition cannot be measure objectively. What is "fair" in your mind may not be "fair" in the B&B's mind, and you could end up missing out on a great opportunity just because your feelings and sense of "fairness" got hurt.

Decide what your time, effort and talents are worth, and ask that they pay you that amount. Oh, and that is not a %. A % is not an amount, it is a %, again a relative things. State your wage in $, an objective measure.

Sure, what local spas charge/pay is a ballpark, but you will find a different situation in nearly every place, so there is not an apples to apples comparison. The MTs from the local spa may be doing it "off the clock" from the spa, and people tend to have lower pay expectations of "gravy" vs. their primary source of income (how many PT jobs pay more than FT jobs?...hardly any...if they did, they would become your FT job!)

Besides, it is not about what other people make or don't make. That won't make you happy. Only what you earn can satisfy your needs.

It is about you, and your skills, and your effort and your willingness to work. Don't make experience a factor either way, because the guests won't know or care how long you have been doing this, they just want a top quality treatment.
