Well, the Hubby and I just moved back to our hometown. We bought a house that we are completely remodeling -- right now the whole house is down the the studs so that we can rewire and plumb.

Since we are redoing everything we will be making my treatment room exactly how I want it!!! (Along with the rest of the house of course.) The room already has an outside entrance and it is right by the bathroom.

I'm planning on putting a sink in the room and soundproofing it with extra insulation...what else should I consider??

What would the treatment room of your dreams have in it?? What are some things I should make sure to do??

I'd build in speakers and some sort of zone heat/AC. Indirect lighting, and can't decide on extra thick carpet and pad or not.

I do mainly outcalls but see approximately 30% of my clients in my home and would love to have a larger closet for storage. Preferably a walk in.
I can picture it now,, sigh. a hamper for dirty linens, shelves for supplies, a place for my hot stone set up.

If I were you'd I'd look into actual soundproofing for the walls, since you're completely remodeling anyway. I think you can find some good ideas and products if you do a google search. Mostly the things you'll find are geared towards studios for music recording.
Oh yeah, and look into soundproofing the floor and/or ceiling, too!

How about putting wiring in the walls for sconces? I'd suggest putting in dimmers. And having enough around the room to light it softly without overhead lights.

A few things to consider...

Check that your town's zoning ordinances permit this kind of build out and that you comply with any massage establishment inspection criteria. Some of them can be pretty arcane.

By making this a commercial space, you probably have different building inspection criteria / code to meet, including entrance and egress requirements.


Unless you plan on living there for 15+ years, specialty use rooms often make a home difficult to resell. The more a new owner has to "un do" the lower your price will be

Consider alternate uses for the space for another owner.

Can you plumb in a way that you could make this a laundry room and just hide the hookups?

My current room is very close to the room of my dreams!

What makes it great:
Plenty of natural light (2 east windows, 1 south window, 1 skylight on the west roof) (plus I can open all the windows often to really air out the room)
Space is about 16'x20'
extra padding under the carpet (plus my rug on top of it)
medical grade sound proofing between walls
very, very tight energy efficient windows (very low noise and my east windows are on the street side)
2 HVAC vents blowing in and one pulling out
lots of plugs
ceiling slants down from center to the sides to create very cozy feeling in a large space
2 handicap accessible bathrooms on my floor
waiting rooms on both floors
handicap accessible (we have a lift in the building)

what I would want different:
more storage (I have a small closet with shelving and bars in it, but I feel I could always use more)(would love to have a large microwave inside the closet to heat up rice packs and hot towels, etc)
while the walls are soundproof the door isn't that great. So, if people chat outside my door (which rarely, rarely happens) it is a bit annoying.
I would like a bit more control over my own temperature. My 'zone' is shared with two other offices so we have to keep it at a reasonable temp. I had to bring in a small heater for clients who like it a bit warmer in the room. But it works out because it does create some white noise.

Then, if I really had the money and the space, I'd love to put in a steam shower. We had one at the spa I used to manage and clients loved it!! I loved it because people were so warmed up and ready to go when they got on the table. Plus, clients could come right from work or the gym and have the chance to shower before the session and/or shower before going back to work or out for the night. I really do miss it!

Great ideas everyone!!!

We plan on this being our permanent home so I don't have to worry about the room being multi-purpose in the future.

I've been researching on what we need to make sure to do to meet state and city requirements. Since we're essencially starting from scratch we can pretty much do whatever we've got to do to comply.

Have you looked into Feng Shui? It would be nice to have the water aspect (the sink you're installing) in the appropriate corner/gua as part of the room design. I love this book, lots of good diagrams and it's fun to read: "Move Your Stuff, Change Your Life" by Karen Rauch Carter.

I second the suggestion of lots of electrical outlet plugs. My room has exactly one, where there's not even room to plug anything in, so I must snake extension cords everywhere. It would be particularly nice to have an outlet under the massage table for plugging in the heating blanket!

Actually we have them @ the spa where I work. They are directly below the massage table so that we can plug the table warmer in. They have brass outlets and covers, so that static electricity does not become an issue... and the outlet/plug cover goes over the unused outlet, preventing dust or other debris from falling into the outlet.
It is nice not to have to worry about tripping over the cord though! And our clients seem to love the table warmers on almost all year 'round.

Many outlets... check!

I would suggest overhead lighting that can be dimmed or turned off while in session. This helps greatly when cleaning.

Also, if you have windows, blackout curtains would be nice.

Seperate thermostat control for the room.

I agree with having the room wired for sound as well. It's so nice not to have to worry about speaker placement when they are in the walls.

Countertop space. I wish I had some....

Here is something I posted a bit ago about soundproofing

***I had the oppertunity to build my treatment room from scratch, so not all of this may work for you, but the way I did it was the most inexpensive way I have found, and it may be something to speak with the landlord about.***
The most important thing I did was build double thick walls, and use a lot of insulation. The technique is called Seforum.xxxgered Stud, and is not hard to do.
Basically, we took the exsisting outside wall, insulated it with R13 insulation between studs, place a foam insulation sheet over that, and build another wall frame with studs on center of the previous wall (studs are 16 in apart, so we put the second wall frame on a seforum.xxxger of half that.) We insulated this part of the wall with the R 13, and then put Drywall over it. When we screwed the drywall to the stud, we used rubber grommited drywall screws (again a sound barrier) and wherever the inside wall touched the outside wall, we used daptek plus, and other various insulation substances to block noise. Also, the Drywall we used was thicker than normal. 5/8 inch I think.

Here are some other ideas
1. Soft surfaces absorb sound, so carpet and padding is good to have in the office. (floors, walls, doors, etc)
2. Insulate all openings with a sound resistant barrier. This includes outlet openings, around pipes and doorways. Dap Tek Plus is wonderful.
3. Door ways are the easiest place for sound to come through. Seal them well with weather stripping, a door sweep etc.

Home Depot (at least here in SC) has the most knowledgable, helpful employees I have ever met. Bring them your concerns, and they will load you up with great ideas. Make sure to speak with vetran employees, or someone from the pro desk.
I hope I did not overload you with info. I really hope this works out well for you! If this is the right place, and you are willing to work for it, it will be worth it.

Timely topic...

We have sold our building that houses our yoga studio, and my practice, and we are building beginning in June. Woo Hoo!
We are in the process of drawing up plans for our new place, and I've been thinking of how to build the treatment rooms.
One of my thoughts was indirect lighting with dimmer. Floors will be heated for yoga studio(s), and my treatment rooms etc. Should make it nicer for Shiatsu.
Any suggestions for sound proofing doors? I've found drywall with a lead sheet inside for sound proofing. expensive, but only needed for the treatment rooms.
What would your ideal room size be? Currently our floor plan has them at 11x11.

Any other thoughts would be great.

I can tell you from experience that lead sheetrock is really un-necessiarly expensive. It was much cheaper to do what we did, and although it sounds hard, it really wasn't. And it truley is sound proof.
My room size is 12x16, and it really depends on what you are going to be doing in the room, and what you want for storage in the room.
I love the size of my room.
I would HIGHLY suggest 12x11 or 12x12. The room previos to the one I have now was 11x8 and although the table fit lengthwise, I had very little room at the head and feet to manuver. Not ideal for using a stool or proper body mechanics. But again that is just my preference.


As for the doors.. The easiest thing I can tell you is to not let the door frame touch both the inside wall, and the outside wall.
Where the door frame is, leave a gap in the sheetrock and fill it with sound proofing material such as Dap Tek Plus Caulking, foam rubber or something like that. In order to make this look nice, you then attach a peice of moulding to cover the gap/daptek.
Along the frame of the door where the door meets the door frame, use foam rubber so when the door shuts, the rubber fills any gap that may be there otherwise. Also, use a door sweep at the bottom.

Let me tell you, I did alot of research on sounproofing this room, and the best info I got was from the guys at Home Depot. They really deserve the credit for how awesome my treatment room is!

Did some searches, and also called our builder, and asked about doing the seforum.xxxgered stud, and double drywall vs lead... big difference in cost! With the savings it almost pays for the extra cost in going to larger rooms.
Rooms will be slightly less than 12 x 14. He also suggested a commercial grade door that is more substantial for the room doors.

We're expecting o be done for September, so I'll post pics etc. then.
