Tattoos

So. I am currently doing my assessments for Aroma & Reflex VTCT. One of the things we have to do is 'meet industry standards of professional appearance'. I was thinking of getting some sleeveless tops, but I have a tattoo of a bee on my left upper arm. Could a tattoo be considered 'unprofessional' do you think? No doubt I will keep wearing my standard tunic for my last few assessments anyway, but just wondering what the 'industry standard' view is...

Any ideas?

Hi Mel[/align][/align]I have tattoos on my arms and still wear a short sleeved tunic, people are more concerned with your ability to treat than if you have tattoos or studs etc.[/align]

Hi Mel,
i have a tattoo and know several therapists who are in varying stages of covering and of those only one wears some tubigrip round his forearms to cover up, although he says it helps as he is a chiropodist and lots of hand work involved.
Never judge a book by its cover, so I'm with Paul on this one, get out there and show off your talents without worrying.

Wow, I was just reading this article on the BBC News site about a girl with tattoo's that her company inists she "cover up" because it isn't professional and thought about starting a topic here to see what people thought, but theres this one already and one about piercings.

Personally I have no problems what so ever with any form of bodyart, as long as it doesn't affect the hygiene of the treatment - and i can only think of a few piercings that may cause problems. But I know that within a professional industry (I'm an IT Manager as well as therapist) body art is very much frowned upon in a lot of people's mind. The same for more interesting / groovier hair styles.

For you is there a line? Where is it? What would be your reaction if you booked a massage with a therapist, turned up at their private home practice to be confronted by a 6'ft guy with a shaved head other then a bright red mohawk?

While I have no problems, I sometimes think it is a sad reality of todays society that bodyart and decoration is seen as being unprofessional and therefore must affect a person's ability to do their job.

I trained as an acupuncturist with pink dreadlocks & piercings & never found the reactions of my clients negative. I now only have a couple of facial piercings (although one is considered to be quite extreme in my gum frenulum) & the dreads are gone, as I felt they might be detrimental. I also have extensive tattoos but cover these if necessary. For me I would rather get a know a client before unveiling the extent of my bodywork so their opinion of my treatment isn't affected.However,a clean & tidy appearance& professional manner will not be marred by a few pretty piercings.
