Paying for a multi-therapist clinic?

I definately know a lot more about rental agreements now than I did when I signed it. I don't have any repocussions against what she did - I do think I own my client files though, thru HIPAA wordage. This was not spelled out in the rental agreement, but since it was that, a RENTAL AGREEMENT, not a contract for employment/contractor/whatever, and I was *technically* supposed to just be renting a room in a building and not be part of her business, I THINK my clients are MY clients - not hers, since I did my own marketing and also paid my share of the marketing she did. I'm talking to some law friends of mine, just to be sure.

Thanks for the sympathy! I told you guys this woman was messed up!!! She is very two faced - telling me one thing (or not listening at all) and doing something completely different. Turning paying clients away was the last straw during the slow time - I PAID for the advertising to bring that person in, DAMMIT!!!! :evil: The evil emoticon almost looks like her, LOL!

I'll keep you guys posted on the space. I hope I can afford the renovations, because I really don't want to move again!

I will say this: life was MUCH simpler and easier when I worked as an employee MT. Now that I have 15+ MTs working for me, I put in many more hours beyond the time I spend treating clients. Days off are few and far between.

BUT - I have the best partner I could imagine, and we LOVE working together to run the business! Because we have each other to lean on, we love what we are doing, and know that in time we'll have more freedom to do the other things we enjoy doing, when we want to do them!

Be cautious and do your due diligence on getting the new space up to code, licensing, and everything else. Make sure your business liability insurance (not the same as your MT liability policy) is in place, and make renovation decisions based on practicality, with a long-term view of transitioning from single-MT independent operation to multi-room, multi-MT shared facility.

If you bring in ICs, be sure to have a thorough agreement spelled out, and have a lawyer go over it with a fine-toothed comb before you put it in front of anyone. Some $$ spent on legal counsel early on can prevent a LOT of trouble later on!

Wow, were you an I/C or an employee? Were/Are you invested financially in the business? It sounds like you had a say in the business initially but the business idea changed and you were unaware of the new goals for the business? Was there a business arrangement between the "main therapist" and the "other therapists"? Oral or written. I am extremely curious about the details because I am considering a multi-therapist clinic. Thanks

Sorry for your sudden jump into working for yourself.
Would any of the other therapists at your old place be interested in moving out?

Crazy about the paperwork - I always keep my own copies of the medical release form of EVERY client I put my hands on. I am liable and have to have access to that information if someone were to ever come back and claim an injury against me. So yeah - be sure to work that out ahead of time. And keep accurate copies as you go along.

Find out if the landlord at your new place will give you a break on the rent in exchange for the carpet and other structural work. That only increases the value of his property and he should be willing to do work with you a little bit.

Hi Guys,

in response to some questions:

I was only a renter there, and we shared expenses on advertising, so I did have money invested. Which sucked, because she started using that money to promote student clinic - not us.

I had been in my own office up until I moved there, for transportation reasons and the fact that it *sounded* like maybe I would be able to grow there.

Now, I AM in this new building, and hopefully starting construction soon!! Part of the reason this other situation didn't work is the fact that she was EXTREMELY threatened by me. I have a lot of schooling - I also have very high goals, aspirations, expectations, and ethics - she does not. She is advertising now that she does "Rehab" massage, with 400 hours of training and no continuing ed. :evil: I don't see where she is qualified to touch anyone with no anatomy training. :shock:

So. I don't think I will rent space in this new building to any bodyworkers, unless they are people I know and have already worked with, which narrows it to 3 people - and they aren't in a position to move, so no bodyworkers. *shrug* Fine with me. It will be a nice enough space for other quiet professionals to be, provided they don't mind strong essential oils. :

It is supposed to rain all week, so hopefully the contractor will finally start this inside job tomorrow.
