Ionic Foot Baths

Anyone offer this service in their practice? Has anyone had this done? Clients are starting to ask us for it, so I thought I would check around and see who has experience with it.

A chiro nearby offers this service. Im not convinced. He claims it pulls toxins out through your feet (Im thinking he didnt read all the info on the bath!) He offered a session free to one of my clients (sample, i suppose) and told her the dirt in the water was "all the toxins being released from yor body through your feet, and whats left is the dirty water" say wha....? I personally dont know a whole lot about it, but from what he's telling people, sounds like he doesnt either! Id be interested to know if anyone does use it, how it works.....

There is SUCH a buz about this thing around here. If the clients keep asking about it at the rate they are right now, it would be hard for me not to order one. Especially since I will not need to pay someone to run it for me...

I've actually had this done after a friend insisted I go and check this out. The experience was interesting and by the end of my soak the water that was clean was full of sludge like material which included metal type shavings and smelled strongly of yeast and something else I couldn't pick out ( I have a highly sensitive nose - fortunately or un). Granted, I had this treatment combined with another that supposedly made the ionic bath more effective.

The woman who does it is quite interesting and while I won't go into her back story I will say that she has several medical doctors that see her secretly and has had a chemist take a sample of his water back to the lab to find that it was indeed all the toxins she said was coming out of him (she watches the water and can tell what part of the body is being detoxified and have a general idea of what is floating up in the water - often heavy metals, yeast, fatty substances, etc.)

The moment I was done with the process I began with a sore throat and ended up with four days of flu/bronchitis. The after effects kinda reminded me of my last post lymphatic when I wasn't hydrated well. I'm quite ignorant of the process but for what it's worth, this was my experience.

I wrote the following when someone asked what I thought of the "Cellular Cleanse Erchonia EB-305" http://www.eb305.com/.

I just read the specs, and though I completely understand the theory and the science they're trying to promote, I honestly don't know whether to laugh or cry at how supposed "doctors" can promote this type of tripe. It's just an attempt to suck money out of everyone, and your friend should run far in the opposite direction.

Just the basics of the treatments and the machine parts: treatments need to be done every other day, and the array lasts 50-75 treatments. Then it needs to be replaced. At $100 per replacement, if you were using it daily on clients, you'd go through them like crazy.

The science, dear God, how do these people sleep at night? I read the ionic field explanation and it's just simple electrostatic concepts that you first are introduced to as a kid in elementary school. Nothing fancy here, except they try to make it look that way. Like objects repel, opposites attract. We're exposed to static electric fields like this EVERY DAY. You don't feel any better standing next to your dryer. Rubbing a balloon on your head and putting it between your feet doesn't make you healthy (but it will make the balloon stick to the wall). The water, which is supposed to increase the potential of this field, actually negates it. I mean, think about it logically. Would you WANT to sit in a tub of water with an active electric field generated between your feet???

When you pull a wool sweater over your head, your hair stands up. You put water on it to restore the general neutrality of your body and remove the static/ionic field. Shuffling your feet over a carpet fills you with ions, and touching another person discharges you. But it doesn't make you any healthier.

It disgusts me to see "professionals" make these products and try to sell them as cures. You could make one of these at home with a vinyl or plastic rod and a bit of wool cloth. Rubbing the wool on the rod would create a comparable electromagnetic field. Toss it in water and put your feet in it and get back to me. If you think you feel better, it's just the good ol' "placebo" effect. The machine is touted by doctors, who are professionals. With all the facts they claim they have to prove it's helping, if you spend money on it, then you will definitely WANT it to work. No one wants to waste money, so most of us pretend there is something beneficial even when there isn't. Mind over matter, and they get to go to the bank with ludicrous amount of cash in their pockets.

It just disgusts me how some people try to exploit others, especially those who are ill and are desperately looking for that miracle cure that will make them better.

Now, as for what you see in the bottom of the tub--isn't it a bit interesting that the color of what comes out corresponds with the traditional colors associated with those bodily systems (green for gall bladder, red for blood, white for lymph, etc)? Many of these "ionic cleanse" machines require that you add a special salt to the water, as salt helps the electric current to travel through water. An electric current, whether added to salted or regular tap water, will seperate out the natural minerals and compounds in the water--salt and copper will tint the water a green, black and brown will be lead, and so on. Any oil that is skimming the surface is most likely going to be your own sebum, as the feet produce a fair bit of sweat and sebum.

And the question about the alkaline/acid balance in the body. Normal blood pH levels are 7.35. It is important for the blood to maintain pH--it is a very important part of the homeostatic environment that must be maintained to keep the body functioning properly. In fact, the body contains a number of natural buffers to ensure the balance varies very little. The only time you may have a bit of an imbalance is in your gastrointestinal tract, or if you have been diagnosed with a yeast infection. And if you want to treat that, the best solution is yogurt or dietary supplements of active probiotic cultures, not a foot bath! Other than that, your pH is always fine and doesn't need rebalancing--and if it did, it would need, at the least, a kidney dialysis machine, not a tiny electric current.

I agree Katse. I would love to see this one debunked once and for all. I've tried it, then researched it. The salt increases conductivity, the iron plate will produce the reddish color. The other colors are dependent on the minerals present in perspiration. The lipids floating on the surface are the result of emulsification of the oils present on the skin reacting with the current.

I was able to produce similar results by placing a few drops of jojoba in a dirty bucket with the salt and the electrode. The result was a brownish-yellow, odorous, flecked water.

Normally, I'm pretty open to alternative methods, even energetic therapies, but this particular "therapy," is misrepresentation at best.

I find it terrible that people waste money on treatments that do not work. Included in these treatments are pharmaceuticals, radiation, chemotherapy and surgeries. All of which do much more permanent damage to the body than herbs, energy work, or ionic foot baths. These risky therapies can also be life saving techniques in certain situations. I like to think of these less invasive treatments as complementary medicine. If only we lived in a world of perfect health care - where a person could recieve the benefits of all of these things while eating right, exercising and of course, receiving bodywork, as tailored to each individual's need... All in the name of healing.

My suggestion? Try it yourself and see!

Husband is being a guniea pig, and I'm trying to chart his findings there, but can't get into that post, so if you like, I'll put them here and keep it up as he moves along... I have about 4 sessions to add:

So, my husband who doesn't believe in anything that's hooy-ish, is our guniea pig for the foot baths. We know someone who we barter with so he's testing them out to see how it works and what it may or may not do to/for him.

I will update this post as I can, and if the system won't let me in after a while, then I'll make a new post.

I agree that this is a phony misrepresented natural therapy. It's frustrating that people are quick to assume that this is what it's said to be, and never bother to find out the real and simple science behind what's actually happening. There's a lot to be said for alternative medicine, but it's okay not to jump on every bandwagon people!

He is always sleepy after the foot baths, but overall, he says he's feeling "peppy-er". Sorry that I can't be more specific than that.

We're bartering with a lady down the street about 30 mins., so it's a hop-skip and jump away, which means, he'll probably continue on as the guniea pig for at least a month or two longer, since he "can". We figured it's one of the few unbiased opinions to be provided, so, why not do some research and check it out....

Granted, you'd have to know that he almost died in the hospital about 4 years ago (age 41 at the time), so it's been a long haul back into a normal life anyway.... which means "peppy" is much better than "not-so-peppy". 8)

Just curious, since you've got a good record of his reasonably similar experiences, would you be willing/able to try something different next time? Like making sure the unit is WELL cleaned (though I'm sure it's cleaned anyway, but particularly for this time) and see if your husband can wash his feet and rinse them well at the site before the treatment, and use distilled water? I'm just curious if making sure everything is spotless and contaminant free as possible, if there would be any noticeable differences.

I had always thought this to be off the wall, but got talked into trying it by someone who has a good unit that they have been using for years. At the time, it just felt very relaxing, much as having your feet in any warm water would! Yes the water was yucky, especially orange-brown that I think is supposed to be joints.

However, the inflammation on my bunion felt much better for about two weeks afterwards. It is about an hour's drive away, so I haven't gone back.


She says that some of the units are just too cheap and that some aren't even safe.
