MY "Golden Age" in Tokyo was 2000-2001. The Tokyo scene for non-Japanese speakers is not very large. Mostly only Roppongi and maybe parts of Shibuya. I can speak fluent Japanese but still liked Roppongi as it's nightlife had a special appeal. However, I never thought that Japanese women are the most open (sexually or not). I think Thailand is far better for such women.

Pacing oneself is relative. Unlike you at 23, I wanted to be in a high end career that required much study. Japan was my way to "get it (sex) out of my system" at that age. I had to hit the ground running. I don't see an anti-american attitude in Japan. People there still think it is great, like the movies. There is some back lash with foreigners, as the economy, crap for years, is finally effecting people's job opportunities. However, Japan has to be the friendliest towards foreigners in Asia still.
I think Euro guys, French, Italian, were always popular, there just wan't many of them (not native English speakers).
I really would like to know about Tokyo's scene for non-Japanese speakers, how it might have changed and how cool it is.
Kansai is a big area, but there aren't any military bases and not many foreign businessmen, so the non-Japanese language scene is small. I still think girls are crazy for foreigners, mostly because of Hollywood and perceived shortcomings of the local boys, but the rapper underground has taken over the gaijin clubs (Osaka at least. Don't know about other places). This stinks because the rapper underground has loads of j-dudes, and j-girls that aren't necessarily interested in foreigners (probably less then the normal populations). Most of all, the English ability is that much less that is was, which was never great to begin with.
When I was in Osaka in 07 for a couple months, it was the only time I was disrespected by a j-girl at the club and stood up later. I'm not talking about the ex-foregin study students (I see them as not Japanese, but American). I was disrespected a couple times by those too in 04. I'm talking about the average blue collar chick that goes clubbing in Osaka. I doubt j-girl rudeness increased this much in a few years. I think my lack of Japanese ability limited me to these newly hijacked gaijin clubs.

Finally, I'd like to add that I don't think the average j-girl is at a disadvaneforum.xxxe conversationally compared to American. Yes, traditional, shy j-girls aren't apt to talk much, but not all j-girls are shy, some are genki. There are also many smart Japanese girls. Also, how many American girls can have great conversation? Heck, even in America, I still mostly date J-girl exchange students at my health school.

When was this golden age? Different blokes say different times. Many say the 80s were, as there was a bubble economy and very few ekaiwas recruiting.
I've never heard people say the late nineties, early 00s were.
I first came to Japan on JET in 03-04. I could only stay a year, as I had prior commitments. The time was good.
I came back for a summer in 07. Same place, Osaka. The vibe had changed. All the gaijin joints, like sam and daves were taken over by Japanese rappers, nary a gaijin to be found. It might be more generational, as I still had some great hook ups with women that were my same age, late twenties.
I don't think that gaijin are less popular, just less hangouts for them (at least in kansai). Those with Japanese abililty, it would be the same then.
Also, kawai (cute) is very important for guys and girls in Japan. As a twenty three year old, I was much more cute then a 27 year old.

Anyone care to comment on the "golden days", whenever they were if they existed.

The Japanese are very trendy. Whether it's a certain food, sport, brand name, or dating trend, they all go nuts before moving onto the next trend.

I remember when gaijin boyfriends were a huge hit in Japan. I remember seeing the huge lineup of Japanese women in front of the US military bases. What a shocking sight that was!

Although it's hard to generalize, it seems to me as though the Japanese girls of today are interested in Japanese men who are almost androgynous. Slender guys with bleached hair, fair complexion, no muscles, waxed eyebrows, etc. Not sure why, but from my observation, those are the guys who are picking up the women these days...

Of course Roppongi will always have it's own "ecosystem" of easy women looking for foreigners but during my last visit in November, I noticed that the ratio of girls to guys was maybe 1 to 3. Yes, one girl for three guys!

As for marrying Japanese girls, I think it's best to find a girl who's traveling abroad in your home country. Of course the selection will be minuscule in comparison but you'll find that they're much better in terms of marriage material. A lot of the girls in Japan are spoiled, very narrow minded and immature compared to western girls of the same age. Sure, they may wail like a hyena in bed and swallow your load like it's an individual food group but even that wears thin after a while.

If you're independently wealthy, willing to live in Japan and are looking for a trophy wife, a Japanese girl may be a good choice. But if you're looking for a soul mate who will treat you as an equal, you'll have to do a lot of searching.

I lived in Japan (Tokyo) from early 2000-mid 2001 working for a law firm. I can honestly say, it was truly one of the best times of my life. The possibility to bang hundreds of women is indeed certainly possible in Japan. As some of the other posts mentioned, Tokyo (especially Roppongi) was like life in the 60's when I was there. The bars played great music, beer was reasonably prices, people were friendly, and you could take home the hottest girl in the bar just by showing up. But the value of the ass you score in Japan is truly priceless. When you see friends with bitchy wives and jobs that make them miserable, just think about your time in Japan and smile. In 2003 I joined a Japanese marriage agency thinking to maybe get married to a Japanese girl and settle down. I met about 25 different girls during my trips back and forth. Anyway, Japan still seems to be a good market for girls but I still don't think it is the paradise that it once was. If you can live there for some time, I am sure there is still a gold mine to find there - it just might be harder to find. Yes I can easily agree that hitting triple figures in Japan is no real issue, and that being older can increase that rate further, if volume is what you are about.

Nothing Executive is writing is far-fetched, believe me. Japan is sex paradise if you have the basic skills, and like I said, don't worry about language for getting your target. I did a 4-year stint in the mountains and an 11-year stint in Tokyo. Tokyo's Roppongi was fabulous back then - everyone in a great mood, sex every night with damn near whoever. Ok so what are the pros and cons?

The pros I think you know. As a fairly geeky guy back home with not much chance with women (virgin until 21 I think?), the first few dates with girls in Japan boosted my confidence and made me feel like maybe I wasn't such a loser after all. A few hangups got wiped out.

The cons, in >my< view (others will disagree):

- I began to take everything for granted and adopt a certain arrogance, making it hard for me to go home for any period of time and interact properly with women. - Japanese girls are not always as full of independent 'spark' as one might find in say, French girls or perhaps Latinas. This balance tipped more and more in favour of the mental as I got older.

I became fluent in Japanese and attended university there, but I never met anyone that I could mentally connect with until I started dating the girls who had been in the west for a little and brought slightly closer to my own culture. Then I found something closer to the balance I wanted.

There are books on the differences in the way Japanese think vs other countries and I don't intend to go into it here, but in short, I found myself wanting someone who could openly express an opinion - something Japanese people often have difficulty with. Like many of the foreign guys in their fist experience with Asian girls, don't be stupid and fall in love with the first one you meet! The divorce rate for gaijin-JGirl marriages is particularly high for those that don't have enough experience of each other's culture. Where did I get the stats? Nowhere, just knowing enough of these relationships over 15 years and noticing what ones worked and what ones didn't.

The other con is that even though sex was taking a second place to brains in my preferred characteristics in a girl, sexually, I began to want more. Conventional fucking was no longer a blast, when I could have 6 girlfriends at once (each of whom usually thinks they're the only one) and sex whenever I wanted. I got tired of pounding pussy. Go to any small town and meet the resident English teachers there - there'll be at least one Charisma Man amongst them who is slowly working his way through every cute Japanese girl around him.

Am I glad I spent most of my adult life in Japan? No. Would I go back and do Japan again of I was 23 again? Hell yes. But I'd work out what was happening to my brain, ego and sex drive sooner rather than later.

Can you suggest some Japanese phrases for me to learn? Gee! Let me try saying that...here goes...! Wow, all Japanese people are so helpful and great! Gosh, you are so helpful to me. Can you recommend some good places to go in Tokyo to see Japanese culture? Uh, how do Kanji work? Wow! That's great!..." by this seforum.xxxe they will invite you somewhere or if not, if you've gotten more than 2-3 genuine laughs out of them and have their trust, you can get one away somewhere nice and get the number. The coup de grace is to admit "how beautiful your face is - it's strange, but it seems like your skin is perfect - do you take a lot of vitamins or something?" warranting further laughter, but silent appreciation of the compliment. If you aren't getting arm-holding after 1-2 hours when you walk through town to the next place, then consider getting a number and the second date. Also: GET RID OF THE QUIET FRIEND. Since I lived in Japan (Tokyo) for 9 years (1994-2003), I thought I might supplement some of the great information contained in this thread. I especially am adding this information for other monger brothers over 40, who in reading this thread might have given up all hope of ever scoring with a regular Jgirl. Don't buy into that crap for a minute.

I was 50 when I arrived in Tokyo, and what I discovered is that the older guys actually have a BETTER chance than the younger ones, and for several reasons you can probably guess.

First, the perception is that the older guys are more settled, have more experience, are wiser, and probably have more money/assets. All of which are true.

Second, age in Japan is different from age in Western cultures. Age is much more respected and admired, partially for the reasons stated above, but also because of the teachings within the Japanese culture.

I lived in Meguro, and hung out at a "live house" called What The Dickens in Ebisu most of the time. It's near the east exit of the train station and is easy to find if you walk between the KFC and Wendy's that you will see upon exiting. From Thursday through Saturday this place is packed, and the Jgirls that pack it are those that are highly interested in gaijin. If you're an "older" guy, like I was, all you need to do is get a drink and stand there. The girls will eventually come up to you and start a conversation. On nights where this does not happen, it's very easy for you to walk up and start your own conversation.

I took many (25+) girls home from the Dickens during my stay, and that was on the first night. I took many others home the first night from other places as well. I agree with a poster who said that you must work quickly, and in fact that's what they expect anyway.

This is more how a Japanese man would do nampa, very obvious, false pretexts, followed by random targeting. It is a numbers game, but it is also not one. This much low-grade, random nampa will burn you out in weeks, not to mention grind down the "cool factor" of Westerners.
Needless to say, one of the greatest advaneforum.xxxes of a foreigner in Japan is the better game we were forced to develop in our Anglo countries. I've had Japanese girlfriends tell me about the weak nampa of Japanese guys: one mentioned being approached by a stranger who, in a sheepish way asked her for coffee because his friend never showed up, another was just flashed (not uncommon in Japan). Often most Japanese men just discreetly molest as a form of nampa (I don't want to most Japanese men do this. There are many honest, generous j-men).
I've nampa shita on the streets with Japanese women who didn't know English successfully, but this isn't usual. The language barrier will always get you before other stuff does.
The "I'm lost" works good, especially if it is in the evening and the destination is an English bar/coffee house. Also, if you see a girl reading English material (English is popular in Japan, though no one actually can speak) ask if she is studying. Otherwise, I would scope out the girl, see if she has an attitude, eye contact and make a comment on clothes, prodigious cell phone texting and go from there. The conversation does not have to be clever, just pleasant. If the girl knows no English, I am relegated to my very poor Japanese skills. The only topics are: job, food, where I am from, my stay in Japan etc. In addition to hand signals, one might wedge a future date into that. If she knows a little English, just be normal. In fact, complex jokes and slang will not get past the language barrier.
Almost all Japanese girls are polite enough to talk, even if not interested. Many girls are not approached in Japan believe it or not, so they will find you talking to them pleasant. The problem again is the language barrier.
I have enough Japanese to push for a date and talk about my job. That is almost never enough. However, some girls will go for the "lessons" angle, though you are fighting an uphill battle from there because lessons often mean just that. The Japanese woman has not developed the B.S. meter that Anglo women have because Japanese men don't have to invent them. I suppose an electronic dictionary would help. Garnering numbers is not a complete wast either. The chance of a Japanese woman going home the some day with a man, especially out of a club environment is very small.
It is actually hard for Japanese women to meet foreigners, even if they know English, so if you are an average decent guy, you are already ahead of most non-Anglo guys with this woman.
However, because there are so few English speakers, expect rejection. Ozgaijin's numbers are way off. You could pick up more women by flashing in Japan. I will give him credit for trying at his age and with poor Japanese skills.
I would also disagree that most j-girls don't want a foreigner. Though they don't think about it in those terms, the combination of hollywood and gaijin's greater masculinity, chivalry and game puts all westerners a step up from what they would be at home. I have never met one guy that couldn't hook up in Japan that wasn't trying, this includes a fat, smelly Euro-grad student, an ugly, fat disagreeable man and an Englishman who insisted on wearing tuxes everywhere and had a dark, quiet brooding about him. There are also many more pretty women in Japan then we are accustomed too.
The reason why there aren't many top-notch j-girls with westerners has more to do with the former's lack of English and the fact that there is a lot of physiological homology in Japan, for instance I have only seen a nine in Japan seven times in my 1.5 years there, while I've heard that other Caucasion countries have very many. I've actually heard old Japan hands mention how they miss the toads back home because they get board with the high-quality, yet standard j-girl model, it be a rough 7 back home.
A big city is also necessary because the women will shun you if they know you are double dipping and everybody watches the lone gaijin, everybody. There are also very few women in the provinces, almost all in the city.
Again, it comes to the language barrier: a guy in his twenties that isn't a complete troll, but has excellent j-skills, will be almost as cool as Bond. A tall, above average twenty-something, but with almost no Japanese skills (myself) will have to try hard: go out on the weekends, do the occasional nampa when the target looks right, use internet dating as a supplement, but he will clean up. After a few months in country, I find myself having too many girls to spend time with in addition to job, napping (English teacher hours are all early weekend) and keeping track of names (you must always vet new talent to keep the cycle going, as most girls fail). Needless to say, I've never been in Japan long enough to get out of the "prisoner-on-leave" phase most Anglosphere men enter when they travel abroad.
Guys out of their early thirties with j-skills can still do better then non-speakers in their twenties, but the thirty-something without language skills will be in more trouble. If he works an ekaiwa (language school) job, he may want to try a different country. He could still have a very good time in Japan, but it may not be worth the lost income, harassment at work etc.
One might also be aware that not all English jobs are equal. When I did JET I had loads of time, couldn't be fired, higher pay and a network of other JETs and more respect from locals, as I was a government employee. My second time as an ekaiwa instructor, I was forced to do their boring lessons, had to project the genki dork of a j-salesmen (watch how fast the students will complain on you the slightest form slip up), horrible schedule that gave me only a few hours sleep a day if I wanted to go out on weekends, loopholes that sucked my paycheck etc.
