Hot Stones

I have the conair set.  I haven't used it yet, but what I didn't like is that it doesn't come with an instruction booklet.  The stones are small and I assumed it was for the face, hands and feet.  I just received a dvd on Healing Stone Massage from amazon.com So far it is pretty good.  I had a couple questions for givers and receivers of hot stone massage 1) What temp. do you heat your stones to?  lady on the dvd said 120-135 degrees is the setting on her heating unit.  2) Have you ever burnt anyone with the hot stones or has anyone gotten burned from the stones?  What was your experience and what did you do about it?

Every warmer unit will need to be set differently. For instance, I use an electric skillet & rarely raise the temp above warm! Use a thermometer, placed in the water, touching the stones. I use insulated gloves to remove the rocks onto a tray. You kind of get in tune with it after some practice, but if they are 'smokin' (ha) I'll squirt them with some wintergreen/alcohol in a mister bottle. If I can hold them in my hands, they won't burn the client. However, that's not to say that the temp will be comfortable to everyone. Everyone's tolerance is different. I apply my medium, then transfer some of the heat from the stone to my hands by rolling it in my palms like a bar of soap, applying my warmed hands to the client a couple of times. then when I finally apply the stone, I do it without any added pressure, keeping it moving & asking them if they are comfortable with that temp.Jill/sagetherapist

I had my first hot stone massage and was burned by a stone on my back.  It felt hot, but good.  it was a deeper relaxation then a regular massage.  I didn't know it until the therapist turned me over and noticed a welt, she apologized and told me to keep an eye on it.  by the end of the day it was a huge blister.  I made her aware of it and now i just can't wait until it goes away.  Now i'm a little afraid of learning the hot stone massage.

Oh my gosh... how did that person tolerate holding that stone if it caused a second degree burn? wow. sorry for your experience.Jill/Sagetherapist

We had a similar experience at my shop.  The stones were cool enough for the therapist to pick up and place on the table, but the weight of the client laying on them caused the client to receive a bad burn.  I talked to the client many times and held my breath for weeks, hoping she would'nt sue us!  As a result, we no longer have clients lie back on the stones--just too risky for me.Kay
