I am writing today in response to the Register editorial board's observation that "massaging a back" shouldn't require a license. I have been a licensed massage therapist for more than four years and that was after two and a half years of education culminating with receiving my degree in applied science and a major in massage therapy. I also have hundreds of continuing education hours as I work towards becoming a specialist in oncology massage. I do more than "massaging a back," and I take great offense to you believing that my career isn't worthy of a license.
The truth is, if the lawmakers deregulate licensing in my field, it will open the doors wide to a host of problems. These are problems that are already rearing their ugly heads including but not limited to: injury of clients, prostitution, human trafficking and fraud. Education is important, and part of that education is being prepared appropriately for working with the public. With all due respect, I hope you understand where you are grievously wrong in your thoughts.
