Conventions and traveling

I am exploring the idea of travelling to work at a couple of conventions that are outside my state. Do I need to be certified/licensed in the state that the convention is held? Does anyone else do this? Please share any experiences with me. Did you ship your table?

My rule of thumb is that if that state's law requires you to be licensed in order to collect fees, then yes. But there may be ways to work this out?

Every state is different.

In some cases, it is a local regulation, not a state.

For instance, MD allows up to 5 consecutive days, but you cannot remain in the state after that -- but you have to have a license from a state with a comparable licensing requirement.

DC has no visting provision and a license is required to massage for money.

In VA, there is no visiting provision, but you don't have to have a license/permit/whatever in some jurisdictions (counties) to do massage if the client is fully clothed (chair massage)

I have an associate that works in MD (we live in PA) and says she is allowed to work there if its only one day. But we have no license. Maybe she has misunderstood the law all along? What is the worse that could happen then?

NY needs a NY license to work, no exceptions.

NY has the highest training/education requirements in the country. No visitors, and certainly not from a state with no licensing requirements.

Working in MD without a license is a misdemeanor. If you got caught you would never be able to get a license in any state that does a background check -- which is most.

I assume the only way anyone would know is if it was reported to the board in MD then?

Honestly I am not to concerned but will warn this person that they are not fully aware of the massage laws in MD and see if they make any changes. Probably not though. This is the business owner I have had issues with last month. :roll:

§ 3-5A-05. Requirements for certification and registration.
(a) Persons permitted to practice massage therapy.-

(1) Except as otherwise provided in this subtitle, an individual shall be:
(i) Certified by the Board before the individual may practice massage therapy in this State; or

(ii) Registered by the Board before the individual may practice non-therapeutic massage in this State.

(2) This section does not apply to:

(i) A student enrolled in an approved education program as determined by the Board while practicing massage therapy in that program;
(ii) An individual permitted to practice massage therapy under regulations adopted by the Board, if the individual:
1. Otherwise has qualified to practice massage therapy in any other state or country that has substantially similar requirements for authorization to practice massage therapy and the individual is in this State for no more than 7 days; or

2. Has an application for a certificate pending before the Board but has not taken the examination required under this section or has taken an examination under this section, but the results of the examination are not yet known;

Thanks for the information. I didn't know about visiting regulations I will have to check on them. Does anyone know about IL or CA (LA) specifically?

There are no state requirements in CA yet. It's each municipality that sets up the rules. So, if it's LA proper that's one thing, but if it's like Huntington Beach, or Burbank, that's a horse of a different color.

I don't know the IL laws off-hand except that their requirements are along the same lines as MO and you have to keep up your NCBTMB certification (NCBTMB which is based in Chicago). Visiting therapists, I don't know at all what their rules are.
