for me for the chemistry of the oils Rosemary Caddy's Essential oils in colour so easy to follow.

As said previous Gabriel Mojays Healthing the spirit is just wonderful.
As well as the fragrant pharmacy I like the fragrant mind.
There are so many but my quick reference book is Julia Lawless: The Encyclopedia of essential oils

I splashed out and bought "The Aromatherapy Practitioner Reference Manual". ISBN O-9643-1410-X - Google it !

It's is on the USA site at $125. I presume there will be postage added. This is for the more serious practitioner, but very very in depth stuff.

Less complex and therefore expensive books.

Our local library had quite good selection also.

Hi everyone

i am looking for a book with aromatherapy recipies in it, you know for massages, room sprays etc etc, for now not too bothered with the academic side i just want to play around making up my own stuff...which book would you recommend...

Hi everyone. I'm a beginner in this field and have just bought a Julia Lawless book (1997) called Complete Illustrated Guide to Aromatherapy as this was the only comprehensive one I found in my local Waterstones.

Since it's only my second book (the first one being NYR's Natural Health & Body Care), I don't know how it compares to the other good books you recommended (I only joined the forum 2 days ago after I got the book from the store).

Could anyone let me know if this is a good book to read & keep? If it's somewhat inferior to those you have recommended, I still have time to exchange/return it as it's still new and I've got my receipt still.

My purpose is to understand more about the oils and how they are practically appied for home beauty and health use, and make little beauty treats for myself, (therefore doesn't have to be academic as long as it is a interesting & useful read), also generally to increase understanding and develop interest in this area - I'm at the early stage of thinking about pursuing it as a career.

Does anyone knows of a good book that goes more in depth explaining the substances in the essential and what their purpose are, a bit more chemistry

I've just noticed that '...In Essence' have an Aromatherapy book as well:
'Aromatherapy in Essence' - as I really loved their Ear Candeling book - I hope this one would be as good to.

Otherwise, as a practical male, I do really like the thick and very scientific:

I found Complete Essentials Oils by Julia Lawless in a charity shop the other day, there's a couple of pages on aldehydes, ketones etc. Quite simple for me to understand, I hated chemistry, there is another book but I can't remember the ladies name who wrote it, will keep looking.

There is one by Sue Clarke, but she wasn't the lady I was thinking of.

I treated myself to that book I mentioned, this weekend:

Aromatherapy in Essence by Nicola Jenkins (Hodder Arnold publications)

Haven't put it down since I got it!

Don't let its thin and concise appearance fool you, as it is really very comprehensive and detailed with a lot of great and insightful tips.

Good for a total novice - and yes, it is jam packed with loads of blends for oils, creams, shampoos and inhalations etc as well as being very useful guide for a qualified practitioner!

Aromatherapy for Health Professionals - Price and Price - Churchill Livingstone Elsevier, 2007. They use plenty of clinical research to support their claims.
All in all, a great book for the more scientifically inclined.

If, like me, you like to combine Shiatsu and the Five Elements with Aromatherapy - I have just discovered this great book:
Aromatherapy for Healing the Spirit, by Gabriel MojayGaia books, 2000

I really love the Patricia Davis A-Z Aromatherapy book it's definitely one of my favourites, and have also just bought her book Subtle Aromatherapy, which I've only just started but am loving already.
