There is a lot of white privilege on this board, if he was White he would not have been killed - PERIOD. This is why Black people protest and now many White people are joining in the protests. If the police can escort Dylan Roof to Burger King after he murdered 9 Black people in a Church, they could've escorted Rayshard Brooks home or tell him to call his Wife to pick him up. I thought Police are trained to make sure a situation does not get escalated to the point that a Black man sleeping in his car ends up with him being murdered by the Cops. The Cops did not have to murder him, they chose to murder him, clearly the cop should have seen a yellow taser in his hand.

With about 1000 people dying at police hands per year in the U.S. you do not have to be a math genius to realize that's a few a day. What people should be asking themselves is why incidents involving black people are receiving the public attention that they are. The answer is pretty simple. Social media has made everything local and when you marry the power of twitter to the narrative that cops are racist then the resulting ignorance is fairly predictable. I am continually astonished (and I speak from painful experience), about how many young people who are borderline hysterical about this subject and who claim to want to "educate" others, are woefully ignorant with regard to facts. Is you truly care, then you should care about facts. The reality is that a five minute investigation of those facts is enough to show any reasonable person that the case being pushed by BLM and the media is demonstrably false.

This statement is exactly the kind of ignorance I was just mentioning. Perhaps you could explain how "white privilege" affects the arguments being made here? While you try, consider that in the U.S., more whites are killed by cops in such circumstances. Every year, no exceptions. Although cops are more likely to use non lethal violence on black men during arrests, they more often use lethal force on whites during arrests.

In america it's different. Do you know how many innocent minorities get incarcerated? A lot! Plus america has a lot of for profit prisons. Guess what? a lot of judges and police chiefs have ties to the owners of these for profit prisons. So to sum it up they get paid to put people in those jails thus they don't really care if the person s innocent or not. Of course they tend to put more innocent minorities in these jails or give them insane prisons sentences like for example 10 years for just smoking a joint. Knowing this do you really think people trust the police who have a history or killing, planting evidence and lying? Now you may ask what does this have to do with this situation? The state of Georgia has many for profit prisons. thus there are many cases of unfair trials.

For sure there's a lot of fucked up things about the U.S. law and order game. No one is denying that, or that in the past racism was far more prevalent among institutions and cops. Hell, no one is denying that racism plays some part in what's going on today. But the claim is that disproportionate rates of arrests, conviction and death are due to racism. Trudeau said as much recently. That is the part that is not true and it does no service to minorities to pretend otherwise.

Obfuscations aside, here are some more facts. Black men in the U.S. comprise roughly 6% to 7% of the population and account for 53% of murder convictions. On the weekend that thousands were out protesting the death of George Floyd, Chicago saw 92 shootings resulting in 27 deaths. In more than 95% of those cases, blacks were wielding the guns. Please explain how racism accounts for those facts.

I know by now to many, I must sound like a racist. I'm repelled by racism and always have been. I'm so tired of hearing people claim to be against racism, but not want to deal with the truth of the matter. It's not simple, it's a complicated situation and deserves a serious public discussion, but unless we can come to grips with the truth, that's never going to happen.

I mean, yeah, but considering the function that cops supposedly serve, that seems like an issue that warrants more than a shoulder shrug. I don't feel, based on my interactions, that most of them are in it out of some benevolent drive, but to act as bullies with impunity. This is a common sentiment outside the Anglosphere, and it comes from decades of dealing with corrupt, trigger (or baton) happy cops. It doesn't help that most of them aren't trained to properly deal with mentally ill people or to deescalate situations in a tactical way. I have a lot of sympathy for the cops here, I think they did their best while dealing with the guy up until the actual arrest, and everything thereafter, I think, is a matter of being trained into bad protocol. But they definitely got the better end of the deal here.

Regardless of race or religion, who cares if one criminal gets killed? One less scumbag in society to worry about. Maybe society should focus on gangs shooting each other up with innocents dying in the cross fire rather than police officers doing their job. And while we are at it, can we please pay someone to kill Marco Muzzo in prison for killing 4 innocent lives and only really serving 4 years before parole. Another joke in our legal system. But all cops are bad right?

The common system of justice in the west operates on the principle that everyone, including 'scumbags' are equal in the eyes of the law, including the ones without a criminal record whose worst crime is being a lush. It also specifies a separation of powers that police regularly overstep. If you think extrajudicial killings are so great, though, why not move to Honduras or Saudi Arabia?

This case in the Wendy's in Atlanta does not fit into that narrative - Rayshard Brooks did not just try to escape, he fought for the taser, and while running away he turned and pointed the weapon at the police. There is a very long list of incidents like those involving George Floyd and Eric Garner that merit fundamental changes to policing. Rayshard Brooks is not one of them.

This is a good example of what is typically seen as racist at first glance, but if you look more closely it is not. You have to look at the whole picture.

Marijuana arrests and charges typically happen as a result of police interacting with someone for another reason. For example, a cop will get a description of a robbery suspect and stop someone as a result of a description match. They may stop a person who is innocent of the robbery but matches the description. If they find marijuana on that person, they can bring a charge. Since blacks tend to commit more crime, they have a higher rate of interaction with police. This is true of almost every type of crime your average street cop gets involved with. I'm not defending that practice and I 100% agree that it is not good policing, but it is also not racist.

If you want to find an example of drug enforcement that comes closer to "systemic" racism you'd have to go back to the 90s, when white people who were convicted of cocaine use were typically getting much lighter sentences than black people using crack. However, even in that situation there were extenuating circumstances. Usually blacks who got harsher sentences had a combination of aggravating factors like prior convictions, resisting arrest or violent behaviour.

I don't think we are using different definitions of systemic racism...because I haven't defined it. The reason I haven't, is that I don't think it exists. I'm willing to define what I think it was. In the past, black people couldn't drink from the same fountains, couldn't join the same clubs, couldn't buy in some neighbourhoods. That was systemic racism. There were clear remedies for those situations and they've been taken.

The "definition" you've cited is a prime example of the problem. It is fancy window dressing without substance. If there are "processes, attitudes and behaviours" that are problematic...why doesn't Sir Macpherson name them? We need something to measure if we are to take action.

The game with systematic racism is that it allows you to move responsibility for racism from individuals who you can point at and identify to institutions that are nebulous entities. The cynical side of me says this is no accident. As long as you identify racism this way, you can forever play the victim card and blame all unequal outcomes on racism. As I said above, this does no favours to minorities.

I think the cop did what he was trained to do. I think a black policeman would have done the same thing. In the middle of a confrontation there is going to be no deep thinking, at best procedure is followed. I think the procedures in place can definitely be scrutinized, replaced. In the case of the cop who killed George Floyd there was a long history of complaints against him. He is a murderer and the "system" failed the community by still employing him.

Now lets do a thought experiment. If police had sensors on their uniform that disabled weapons that were not in range then the police could have let the guy run away. They had his name and address as well as his car so it would only be a matter of time before he was apprehended.
