Constitutionally election commission is mandated to conduct elections from 6 months before the last day of current parliament/ assembly. Unfortunately no legal precedence to postpone or extend the current assembly and that is the reason for elections ..

Only option or precedence is declaration of emergency (or imposing president rule in a state) as Indira Gandhi did for emergency and other prime ministers imposed for states. and imagine the fun if Modi does any of that !!

EC must have restricted the rallies and should not have allowed public gatherings. I am sure they would have had some power around it...

End of the day it is the common sense of public.. no amount of restrictions will help if public chose to wear mask for the chin instead of nose and mouth.

Since we are getting into the nitty gretties of it.

1. Election Commission (EC) does not have the power to postpone the elections. I guess it’s only the President who can do it on the recommendation of blah blah blah.

2. So-called democracy unless Indians want “people’s democracy” which exists in China and Russia.

3. Before the time of the current Parliament/ State Assembly of the MP/MLA gets over, it’s EC’s job to get new ones elected on their place on time unless President’s rule or Emergency is Declared by a majority/ special majority of Parliament and signed by the President, as the case may be.
