I was interested to read the following post from a new member on one of the naturist threads: *




This seems to tie in with the point which I made some time ago, after reading the book ‘Hawaiian Lomilomi’ by Nancy Kahalewai, in which Kahalewai goes out of her way to criticise the ‘Temple Style’ of massage taught by a native Hawaiian called Abraham Kawaii. Most of the Brits (including myself) who have contributed to this Lomi thread seem to have been taught by either Rosalie Samet or Lizy Newton, both of whom teach Kawaii’s ‘Temple Style’. Rosalie Samet was trained in Hawaii by Abraham Kawaii, and Lizy Newton was trained by Susan Painiu Floyd who was herself trained by Abraham Kawaii.

I appreciate each of you in reading this post. My intention is not to criticize, or make fun of Temple Style or other styles of lomilomi. My intention is to clear up any misconceptions of lomilomi.
Abraham Kawai'i is well respected for his long time work of teaching lomilomi, and his wife Ho'okahi now carries on the tradition which is still respected by Hawaiian people.
Many of the traditions taught by Kahu Abraham are profound, but like many forms of massage, there have been people who have taken classes from him, or taken classes from his students who now have interpreted what was taught in a different manner.

As I have read many of the entries here and on the web of Temple style, or Kahuna Bodywork, the ideas shared such as massaging someone in the nude both practitioner and client has somewhat puzzled me. I have also seen many practitioners who "literally" dance around the table and chant who say this is the way it was to be done. It was not taught that way originally by Kahu Abraham. I quote a very reliable source who spoke with Ho'okahi about Kahu's teaching, from the words of Ho'okahi herself: "Ho'okahi said that he did teach a style that used forearms, oil, and movement. The movement was not "dancing" but rather fluid rhythm based on particular sequences of steps. He did not chant before or while giving lomilomi. He did not display nude bodies, but used top and bottom sheets and always draped appropriately. He never taught nor demonstrated sexual touching. He disavowed former students of his who taught it using his name. Several who are renown for teaching “his” method never studied with him. Ho’okahi may be contacted (www.napuaolohe.com) to find out who is authorized to teach his method.

There are many who have good intentions in wanting to teach, but I have found that a lot of things are interpreted differently, or people will add to or subtract from what was originally intended and styles change.

hi, I followed up on hawaiianstyle's recommendation of Kahu Abraham Kawaii's website (www.napuaolohe.com) and his wife Ho'okahi phoned for a long chat yesterday - the trainings they offer sound really interesting. If anyone's interested in doing further Lomi training, this is definitely worth looking at.

Aloha Hawaiian lomi. Here are some other great websites and books you can check out to get wonderful information about lomilomi as well.

One of the most wonderful and informative books that I use constantly for knowledge and information is written by Makana Risser Chai. She has actually written 2 books which are wonderful. Her first book is very informative. It is more of the "HOW TO" book and entititled, "Na Mo'olelo Lomilomi". Her second book is more of the "WHY TO" book of lomilomi entitled, "Hawaiian Massage: Lomilomi, Sacred Touch of Aloha". The second book is a wonderful collection of lomilomi teachers and masters of the art and highly reveered practitioners in the islands. Makana is a wonderful author who has researched her information in depth through talking to kupuna, as well as finding information through archives at the Bishop Museum in Hawaii. She interviewed many of the sources, and really put her heart in to it.

Other websites you can look at are as follows:

lomilomi.com which is put up by a woman Tamara Mandragon. When you pull up the site, click on the highlighted topic of "Cover Story". It is one of the most complete and accurate explanations of the history of lomilomi which is very informative. I use her article in many of my classes for students to read and get a basic understanding of lomilomi.

lomilomi.org is a site for the HLA (Hawaiian Lomilomi Association) that was established in order to perpetuate the art of lomilomi. They are having their annual conference on October 2,3, & 4. All are welcome. Information can be found on the website itself and if you click on the newsletter, you can pull up more information about what will be done at the confernce, as well as highlights of last years conference.

haleola.com is a site by kumu Dane Kaohelani Silva, one of the most respected lomilomi teachers in Hawaii.

manalomi.com is a site of the Hawaiian Healing Academy and is done by Dr. Maka'ala Yates...He also is one of the most respected elders and practitioners of lomilomi.

allenalapai.de/startengl.html is a wonderful website as well. It is done by Allen and Antoinette Alapa'i. World renowned for their work not only in lomilomi, but respected Native Elders invited all over the world to peace conferences of indigenous tribes to promote Hawaiian history and healing through their work in the art of "Ho'oponopono".

I absolutely love each of these people who I know personally and have built friendships with and who I know we could all learn from and gain a wonderful appreciation of the art of lomilomi.

for more information about Hawaiian Healing Traditions such as Lomi Lomi Nui Massage and also Huna elements. There are many different stylesand tradions in Hawaii, each coming from a different family or a renowned healer.
All of them are worth checking.


As for myself: Lomi Lomi Massage is a wonderful, empowering, healing journey to go on to with a client or by myself, when im being massaged,

It is a great deep multi-level healing and a great teaching at the same time.

I've been in contact with a tutor who is willing to travel to the North East to offer training over 3 days.

I offered to organise it all to secure the booking so need to find a couple more people to attend, but its looking good.
