She sent me a HUGE Body Cushion set! I wasn't expecting so many pieces to it. I am so looking forward to learning how to use it! I am so excited, I had to share! Any tips to it, please feel free to share! :grin:

Haha- well, Hubby has demanded to be my guinea pig, and neither of us is expecting, LOL!

I'm just going to put the sheet on over it- that's what our MT friend does, I believe. I did remember that she does use one, so when she comes for her massage from Hubby (they/we trade off- "them" more so than "we"; he has "issues" she has better training to work on than I), I'm going to put her to work showing me things about it that I don't end up seeing in the videos! (and yes, it came with VHS videos. It's an older model- but she only used it for ~1 year before "shoving it in a closet", she said. Still looks great!).

Hummm- I just looked at the schedule, and MT-friend comes on FRIDAY. My photo shoot is on THURSDAY! t017 Guess I'm gonna get a crash-course in "figure it out myself", LOL! (I'll have my model help me get it figured out on Thursday pre-shoot. Comfy positions are comfy positions, whether I'm actually massaging or just pretending to!)

I have been using a body cushion for years - I bought mine used from a MT friend of mine for $150 - money well spent! My pregnant clients love it! Keep in mind that just like anything else, it is not for everyone. But I will say, I have had clients tell me it is worth coming in even it's just to lay face down!

Some tips I have learned (I never had the video, so this may be addressed in the video)

Put a LARGE bath towel between the cushion and the sheet. It is so much more comfortable then the shock of a pregnant belly feeling to cold vinyl through the sheet!

I encourage my clients to climb up onto the table from the foot of the table, on hands and knees.

Not sure how to explain this one, so bear with me: Fold the top sheet only half way across so your pregnant client will be able to easily pull the sheet across her.

When rolling over onto back or side, (Make sure the head rest is still velcroed to the rest of the cushion) pull the sheet up over their shoulders, and instruct your client to again get up on hands and knees, and with your back turned (to provide privacy, of course) pull the head rest and the rest of the cushion out. (This may take some practice, but once you have the hang of it, it is so easy!

i take out the head rest first, do a pushup, pull the cushion out the side, then have them flip under the sheet while i hold it over them. forget buying the extra bolsters just take a large bath towel, fold in half then roll it up, put 3 elastic bands around it spread out ( i like black towels as they end up looking more proffesional?).
You will get used to how wide to spread out the cushions, i explain to them (while the sheet is pulled back so they can see what im talking about) that they set ther chest in the holes and there stomach will drop down into the cushion just right.

We do so much preg massage that we actually bought a second cushion system, for when we have two pregs at once. we have 3 tx rooms.

if you are going to invest in the cushion, market it!!! let them know ahead of time, know who in your area has one. Put pics of it on your website, teach your mt's how to use it properly.

Only 1 in 25? new patients don't like the cushion, explain before they get on what the option is, sideline.

So far I've done 2- no, 3 massage sessions using the BodyCushion, if I include the portion of the photo shoot where she was on that rather than bolstered up with pillows. I still haven't watched the videos yet, but I came across an older advertisement for the BC that showed tiny pics of a pregnant woman in both sidelying and supine (!) positions on the BC. I'm not entirely sure I'd want to do the supine-as-I-saw-in-the-magazine position, as it still had her way flatter than I think a women that pregnant should lie, but I was indeed intrigued and shall be experimenting with it more over time. Dear Hubby will get to "play pregnant" for me a few times while I fumble around and figure it out, LOL! (He won't mind- it'll mean he's actually getting some bodywork done at the same time). Sadly, I have realized that the photos we took the day before yesterday won't be as "professional" as I'd like to have- I was throwing wedges everywhere trying to get my model positioned properly, and I neglected to cover the wedges/extra bolsters, so they're going to show! Oh, well. I'll figure something out. Oh, and rmt4u, the extra wedges/supports came with the set. I got "the whole shebang" for $200! So far, the 3 ladies I've had on it have loved it.

Why does it matter how the majority of MTs view it? I got my full pro Body Cushion set last week. I have used it on about 10 people. 9 of them LOVED it. 1 of them liked it well enough. None were pregnant and half were males. I used it myself after a full day of work by laying prone on it with a heat pack on my low back. I feel asleep for about 20 minutes and upon waking all the irritation in my back was gone.

I'm excited to use it on a pregnant person, but as things are going right now, I plan on using it for everyone!

It can be used as both. I've used them at some of the places I've worked (I'm planning on getting my own) and I loved using them in all my non-prenatal massages because you absolutely can use it for more than prenatal- although it is the most comfortable prenatal bolster system in my personal opinion.

People with low back issues who are uncomfortable laying flat with only one bolster under their ankles seem to find a lot of relief from it, large-breasted clients find it more comfortable, as well as clients with a large belly. Also, it's just a more natural position for your spine to be in as it supports both the lordodic and thoracic curves when you are lying prone on it. Just because the majority of MTs use it mainly as prenatal support doesn't mean you have to as well!
