Grapeseed Oil

In this Rice Bran Oil thread, people mentioned that they had reactions to grapeseed oil, which I had not been aware of.

When I was at a Pancha Karma training recently someone brought up that Grapeseed oil, being the byproduct of the wine industry, is actually really heavy with ....darn, I can't remember the word she used. But basically impurities that result from the wine making process. Also, it's almost impossible to find organic. I know I can't find it organic anywhere, and I've tried looking everywhere online.

So, has anyone heard about this? Has anyone found it organic anywhere? It's one of the cheapest oils, and also very light and easy to wash out of sheets. But on the other hand, if it's a very "dirty" oil, then I don't want to be using it. Unfortunately I just bought 2 gallons before I found this out! Any comments are appreciated.

Our business has used it for years, and some of our therapists prefer it to the other oils/creams/lotions we also provide. Overall, we have rarely heard of anyone reacting to it, and none of our clients have reported anything negative about the grapeseed oil for a long time.

Shiva: I like Grapeseed oil, too. I use it with horses as a base oil for infused Arnica, etc. I have not heard much in the way of allergies or reactions to it in humans. I just googled Organic Grapeseed Oil and a quite a few listings came up!

Edit: I have a friend who took an herbalist program through Misty Meadows in Lee, NH (mistymeadows.org). They grow, organically, all their herbs and extracts or import from reputable sources. Maybe if they don't carry or produce it, they could point you in the right direction.

Yes, Organic Grapeseed gives a lot of results on google, but hardly any of them are actually an Organic Grapeseed oil that can be purchased.

The only one I have found (so far) is at From nature with Love, and it's $413.10 per gallon ?!?!?!

Thank you! I checked out their website, but they don't seem to have any base oils for sale on the website.

If/since grapeseed oil is a byproduct of wine making, I don't see why they wouldn't have organic readily available at a reasonable price, as organic wines are fairly common.

I checked with Misty Meadows and they get their grapeseed oil from Mountain Rose Herbs (mountainroseherbs.com). The price is still fairly hefty but I'm wondering if maybe you can't make a deal with them on the quantity purchased, etc. 1 gal is $35, and 5 gal is $146 but that is whole heck of a lot better than $413 per gallon...holy moly.

It isn't certified organic (it is, however, expeller pressed and partially refined) but Misty Meadows has been dealing with them for a long time and have been extremely pleased with the quality of all that comes from them.

I also asked if she had ever heard any info about grapeseed being an impure or "dirty" oil, etc and she said that she hadn't...she's never had a problem and no reports of any allergies from consumers.

Anyway, hope that's helpful! Thanks for asking the question, as I'll be getting my grapeseed from her from now on. I am also going to check the health food store next time I am in there to see what grapeseed oil product line they carry (if any).

i second using mountain rose - that's where i get the castor oil for our ab sessions.

also - the only thing about grapeseed oil for me/my clients is the smell, and it always seems to be on the sticky side.

Wow Kindred Spirits! Thanks for all that info. I think that is a great price for good oil. I currently pay $30/gal for my organic sesame, so $35 is right in the ballpark. I will definitely look into them in the future.

I have never noticed grapeseed to have a scent. I use it in shirodhara, and usually the scent of an oil is quiet apparent because it's in such large and flowing quantities. Also, it is one of the easiest oils for clients to wash out of their hair, so I wonder if it's just the source that gives different qualities? I have gotten mine from Tao Products (bestmassagetable.com) and it has always been scent free and very thin, non-greasy and definitely not sticky. However, the supposedly organic sesame oil I got from them went rancid very quickly, so I don't entirely trust their products.

I have recently "discovered" grapeseed oil and I love it. It glides beautifully and when the session is finished, a quick wipe with a towel and the client's skin just feels moisturized, not oily at all. I am really impressed.

I don't notice any smell from it at all. Mine is cold-pressed - does that make any difference?

You don't trust them because the oil went rancid? My understanding is that organic products will go rancid faster, because there is no preservative. Each oil naturally has its own shelf life. I know that jojoba has almost an indefinite shelf life, but my understanding is that organic grapeseed will go rancid within 6 months. I'm not sure about sesame oil. Do you know its shelf life?

I don't know it's shelf-life off hand, but I do know that I have had other oils that are also organic (including sesame from another brand), and other "pure" oils in bottles sitting with this particular sesame oil and none of them went rancid.

I think part of my distrust was that I purchased "organic sesame" but the bottle I recieved had no organic label on it. So I wondered if they were just using that as a descriptive term, rather than an actual label. Then went it went rancid, that was strike 2.

But now that you mention it, that was probably the oldest oil I have in the house...approaching 2 years old. So it's possible it just went rancid and that was totally normal!

Also, a lot of the other organic oils I have are herbalized - meaning they are cooked over low heat for long periods with herbs. This may do something to them to keep them from going rancid. On the other hand, isn't heat supposed to make oils go rancid more quickly? t102 I don't know how it all works!

I was taught to keep oils refrigerated, so that is what I've always done.

I just happened to be browsing the Mountain Rose Herbs website today and see that they are now carrying organic grapeseed oil (and remembered this thread) ...looks like $13.50 for 8.5 oz (Dec sale price), $33 for 16 oz, $232 1 gal.
