Getting into Reiki?

Hello, all! I am completely new to the whole of massage therapy. I'm 22 years old and one day (three days ago) upon realizing how my current career choice wasn't giving me any kind of fulfilment at all, I came across massage therapy and reflected on it. Turns out, it nails almost everything I want in a career. More specifically, I've always been drawn to the study of Reiki, even before looking at healing and massage therapy as a career choice. Only problem is, I have no point of reference when it comes this field. As a student of community college, majoring in a completely unrelated field, I'm a little at a loss as to how to make the transition and I pretty much don't know where to look to find some good information. I thought I should turn to the experienced for this!

So I wanted to ask everyone how they managed to set foot in practising Reiki. From knowing it was something you wanted to do, to how you first went about getting into, to where you are now. Anything that could help an aspiring MT would be of great use to me at this point. Thanks all!

Well, good for you for looking down and realizing the path you were on didn't fit. I would recommend you find a Reiki Master/teacher in your area that others could recommend. Ask around at the local yoga studio or food coop (cliche' but true). Then book a session with this person to see how you like it.
Reiki is first and foremost a self-enlightenment tool, the ability to help others using the Reiki energy is a side effect. The more work you do on yourself, and the less ego you hold around it, the clearer the channel will be for the Reiki energy.

Thank you, RowanB. I completely agree with you about the ego and that is something I've been slowly working on even before my consideration of Reiki. I can see how important something like this would be to master or at least control in part before applying the practice. I'll most definitely look into the suggestions you've made. I'm still a bit unclear as to what the usual process of a Reiki practitioner is when taking it up as career choice. Does the person find a school first that teaches Reiki? Or is it pretty much finding that one teacher to basically take you as apprentice? In any case, I presume depending on where you live, there are laws dictating the parameters of this very practice and it's requirements. Would I need something more official than apprenticeship? I'm not quite sure where to find all this information, so I apologize for all the curiosity. Any links or sources of information you could suggest that instruct in this regard would be greatly appreciated. Thanks again!

Getting into Reiki?

In terms of licensing and parameters of practice, in short there are none. You can spend $150, go to a one day class and call yourself a Reiki Practitioner. You can even "train" online. I don't recommend either of these scenarios. Reiki I really should be a focus on yourself, and you should continue that self care for at least 6 months or so. (this is just my not-so-humble opinion) When you feel ready Reiki II will get you more to a place where you can work with other folks. Both Reiki I and II can be done in a long day or weekend, but your Reiki Master should be open to communication after the class to continue to guide your progress. Hope this helps. There is lots of decent information online, and also lots of BS, just like any other subject. Pamela Miles is a good resource, you can google her name, although she has her own take on reiki that may or may not mesh with your own.
