Spot on gopher... Datong is definitely not going to make it (it's a shame really, the place was quite nice). I saw Woodstock is already open on Xikang Road, (just around the corner from Manhattan). Hopefully, others will follow suit soon...it'll be great to have the action back up & running.

I think this place is on the way out. Even Woodstock is moving closer to Manhattan. Flying dragon also moved back closer to Manhattan. It was kind of amusing to see all these bar owners guess where the "next tongren lu" would be. In the end, it never moved very far...and you can't underestimate the draw of Manhattan with all of its working girls.

FYI - you can still go to the LA club bar in Datong and get a bj in the back...but it won't be cheap

Was there end-July ....... if you're looking for action, don't bother. All the bars there are just about running up your tab, so much better off just heading to Manhattans.

Woodstock might be the honourable exception, as the "shot bars" may get you some reward if you spend enough there.

Da Tong certainly needs more customers. It's hard to find and the bars are not allowed to advertise right now...so it is up to word of mouth and forums such as this to bring in the customers. I was there last night as well and was the only patron in the 3 bars I went to. It's a great time though...just like Tong Ren lu was. The TT Bar is supposed to be like Manhattan bar...but the place is completely empty every night...a little depressing.

Here's another google maps shot with some detail added...tell the taxi driver you want to go to Julu Road & Rui Jin 1st road... 10-20 meters down past the intersection on Julu Road you'll see a glass covered entrance (circled in yellow).

The exact entrance point is noted by the yellow arrow...it's well lit at night and has the name of a disco on it (sorry, can't remember the name but you really can't miss it). Proceed in here & down the escalator. At the bottom of the escalator you'll immediately see the disco...if you're standing directly facing the disco entrance, turn right & just keep walking...you'll find the bars. Have a good long walk around...you'll be surprised how much is back there. Enjoy

Checked out Datong on my own last night...its really pretty nice and there are at least 15-20 bars open. Jocko posts some nice photos...but I have to say that the entire complex is much bigger than than the photos suggest. The hallway extends down quite far and there are many side hallways with more bars.

Judging from what I saw last night, the quantity of bars and girls far outweighs the quantity of male customers...not sure if the market can sustain this many bars in the long run, but we'll see (and I hope so!)... Anyway, now's a good time to head over there...I had fun last night.

Good update, Jocko. I know Woodstock is recruiting for dancers starting next month so things should just be getting better and better. My understanding is that the bars are still not allowed to advertise just yet.

The club Sin is just up Shimen lu too so you can always start there and work your way down to Datong.

I would just give a short update on the Da Tong Mill.
Finally 70% of the bars started their operation and everything is quite similar to to what it used to be in the Tongren Lu area. I have been told that there are some bars that ain't girlie-bars, but I did not find these yet. If you go there, you will find a lot of familiar places and faces, be it Woodstock, Libido Bar (former Flashback bar, Julu Lu), Nightshift, Exchange Bar (former M zone) and so on. In most of the bars a few lady's drinks and a nice chat will eventually lead to a nice encounter either upstairs or in the back of a bar.

Also, did you pick up this young Chinese girl from Woodstock? I also perfer young chinese girls when I come to Shanghai. Are their certain bars that tend to attract the younger (i.e. 18 - 25ish) Chinese FLs?

This trip I will visit Manhattans and sample the goods (most likely filipino -- I am told) at least once on my next trip. I am hoping to at least snag a younger filipino (i.e. under 29) at manhattans. Is this possible or are they mostly early 30's?

Don't get me wrong I love filipino girls and think they are georgeous and that is why I have planned a trip to the phillipines this year. But when in China, why not sample the chinese? HA HA Maybe if I was in China all the time I would get tired of Chinese and want some variety, so I do understand the alure of other types of girls.

None of the bars, including Woodstock, are officially open. I think the bars will officially open up next month. I am pleased to report that it has been pretty easy taking the bar girls home. I took a cute, big boobed 20 yr old Chinese girl home last night for 1,000. If you go to Manhattan, Chinese girls (young ones anyway) are in the minority. One plus about da tong is that all the girls are Chinese. Personally, I don't care too much if the girl is Chinese or not physically speaking...but it is always nice to work on my Chinese when I have the chance. That way, I can claim the cost on my company's expense reports under training.

I went to Da Tong Mill on Sunday and drank a beer at X-ta-sia. What a great location this mall will be! I started to walk from Hilton Hotel like described in another post, and it took me quite a long time to get there. But at least I got a very good idea of Julu Lu now.

Went to Da Tong yesterday and it is still not quite ready...but should be a must go place for punters and mongers alike by June. It was good to see most bars refurbished and ready. It takes two months to get a proper bar license so we are still about 1 month away from most of these bars opening up officially. Without a license, the bars cannot promote or put signs on their doors. The bars "open" now do not have signs on their doors and pay the police to allow customers.

Went to the new Manhattans next to the Bamboo Bar as recommended on this thread. I am amazed that it looked exactly the same as the previous bar in Tongren Lu. Though an improvement on the Toilets, not cramped and stinking as before.

Hardly any Philipinos, was told that the Chinese government have not extended their visas due to the Expo2010. In truth I was never a fan of them, but found a lot more Vietnamese girls, who are extremely attractive, friendly but with little english. They usually wear low cut dresses, with the boobs pushed up.

Prices for drinks are the same, but the live band was terrible. Paid Rmb 1000 for LT at 3am, or until I slept, selected a Vietnamese girl, completely GFE and fun. No wonder the Americans invaded and stayed for as long as they could in Vietnam - due to the Gals !!

There is somthing 'missing' from the New Bar, definately the location is more sobre and quieter, but its the prime destination for the place of Last Resort, when all else fails.

Went into a bar nearby called Judy's (presume the same as the Tongren Lu), but about 6 foriegn men and 2 girls....not sure it is the same owner as previous in Tongren Lu.
