Tipping Independents

Just wondering. Everyone knows that the girls that work in massage places only get a portion of what you pay as a fee. (What percentage that is- I have no idea...) So I always give a good tip. What about independents that work out of their own home or apartment? They obviously have 0% overhead so your fee is (almost) pure profit. Do you still tip? How much?

I tip if service was good, regardless, as for me it is a reflection of the quality of service and also as a "future investment"

There's not 0 overhead.
Business licensing, association fees, product fees, equipment fees, courses/upgrading fees, rent/mortgage, advertising etc...these are typically things covered when you work on a studio or spa...but when you are independent you pay for these yourself and it ads up to a lot.

OK- You can run a business out of your home without a license. Its done all the time.
-Association fees- only if you want to issue receipts for third parties.
-Product "fees"?? You buy some massage oil- by the gallon- once or twice a year.
-Equipment "fees"?? You buy a massage table, a music player, maybe a stone heater once and done.
-Courses and upgrading? A massage is a massage. They've been doing them for thousands of years. You take a course at Makami and you're good.
- Rent/mortgage?? You gotta pay those anyway.
- Advertising?? Free right here or on Kijiji

Don't take me too seriously, Love2Massage. This is mostly a 'tongue-in-cheek' argument. I truly respect that you are running a legitimate business but can you agree that there may be independent's that operate as I have outlined?

Tipping is an individual thing, several factors rate the amount of tip the provider receives in my books. Good massaging skills, must be female under 30perfered, cutie with pleasant personality, you have her undivided attention during your full session “no cell phones or distractions”, clean pleasant inviroment, clean showers, and most of all options are very much a bonus

I tip the lady all the time because as Dagmar says: It's a future investment. If she is good, I want her to stay in the industry and stay motivated to keep doing what she is doing. If she does an excellent job, I tip more. Every time I leave the place after a session, I tip the lady directly in cash, not via the machine.
This is my motto: TIPS = To Insure Proper Service
I feel great when someone tips me for a good job, I wanted to do the same for the lady too even though she is doing her job. Just like the wait staff at the restaurant, they are getting paid to do their jobs. But a little $ given to them in the form of a tip goes a long way for motivation and brightens just a bit too.

I agree.
I am not if the tipping generation. I pay what is asked regardless of service. My satisfaction, kind “thank you’s“, and return business; is my tip.
All excessive tipping does is drive up prices as things slow down or expectations of tips when none are warranted.

I don't think of the costs associated with the various services I receive whether it is a pedicure, massage , restaurant etc.

I tip because I enjoyed the establishment, the atmosphere and the people who made my visit a good one.

Having worked in the service sector for many years, I always try to tip decent, knowing how badly some customers treat people. It's my way of saying thank you to many who are just taken for granted.

Thank you all for your hard work behind the scenes that goes unnoticed. Thank you for bringing your best effort forward day after day!

In the end: it's all about communication:

I'm not going to punish someone if their skills need to grow. If they put in a great effort, I give a great tip...then let them know. If they are lacking in skills, I may give advice.

If it's a massage with poor effort, or they cut my time short: I give them a small, crappy tip, and tell them why.

If I just give them a crappy tip, or no tip without saying why: they are just going to think I'm a stingy asshole, and there is no incentive for them improve their service.

I probably shouldn't give any tip in the second scenario...but I'm too much of a softy.
