Model who operated sex racket through WhatsApp held; two victims rescued
Shweta Poddar, who has worked in the serial โCrime Patrolโ, used to charge Rs 30,000 for one girl from her customer for three hours stay in the posh hotels of the city. She pushed the struggling models or actress into the racket by assuring them of a break in the film industry.
Mumbai : A 22-year-old small time model-turned-actor Shweta Poddar has been arrested by Oshiwara police for allegedly running a sex racket in the posh Andheri west locality.
A senior officer from Mumbai police said Poddar, who worked as a small time actor in TVโserial โCrime Patrolโ, would send the victimโs photographs to her customers. Acting on a tip off, the Oshiwara police laid a trap by sending some dummy customers. The police rescued two victims during the bust on October 11.
All the victims of this sex racket are struggling models or actress. Poddar used to charge Rs 30,000 for one girl from her customer for three hours stay in the posh hotels of the city. She pushed victims into the prostitution racket by luring them with an opportunity in film industry,โ said the officer.
Police have seized three handsets from Poddar. โThere are around 200 contact numbers of struggling models and actors in the handsets. The customers used to contact Poddar through WhatsApp application where it was convenient for her to send the photographs of struggling models and actors. Once the customer gave the green signal for the model or actor of his choice, she would send her to the preferred location after accepting Rs 30,000 from him. There are hundreds of photos of strugglers whom she used to supply to her customers,โ added the officer.
Poddar, who belongs to West Bengal, was residing in Andheri for the last six months. Police said she started operating the sex racket after she failed to get make it in the film industry.
โShe was in touch with Bollywood bigwigs and it made it easier for her to get contact details of Bollywood strugglers. It was easy for her to push the strugglers into flesh trade by assuring them of a break in the film industry,โ said the officer.
Poddar, who has been booked under relevant sections of Prevention of Immoral Trafficking Act (PITA), has been sent to police custody by the court. The investigators believe that she was operating a bigtime sex racket in the city.
