where to next?

Hi,

Firstly just wanted to say I found this site by accident and it is fantastic - great topics. I have been reading for a couple of days and now plucked up the courage to come and join you all - Thanks to all you regularposters - hope some of you might come to my aid!

I passed the ITEC Holistic Massage in Oct and I have been working in a salon (S/E) for a few months and starting to build this up....HOWEVER... my course has just left me wanting to learn more... (hence the username)

I would like to know more about how to treat specific problems, deeper tissue work. I have spent hours researching courses but have found it all quite confusing! The sports massage course I looked at goes into too much for me at this stage I feel - it is the A&P that daunts me the most! I certainly see this as just the start for me...

Can anyone recommend any courses?

Any thoughts/suggestions would be much appreciated.

Hello Karen and welcome to HP.[/align][/align]You should have already done A+P on your itec course, but if you want to treat specific muscular dysfunctions then you need to know about them in order to treat them.[/align][/align]You are looking at either a sports injury or remedial massage course and they are usually not done at night school so are quite expensive, if you let us know what part of the country you live in then perhaps we can recommend one or two courses to you.[/align]

I totally understand what you mean about wanting to learn more. I too did ITEC a few years ago but found that I couldn't confidently say to people that I could treat their problems like sciatica because I really didn't know what to do.

During the last 2 years I've done a lot of advanced massage training with a company called Jing. www.jingmassage.com Most of the training is done in Brighton but they do run some courses in Oxford and Liverpool. They teach you techniques that you can use straight away on clients. They'll have a stand at The CamExpo show at ExCel in London in October and will be doing some workshops there too.

Paul - I did do the A&Pand feel ok about that but I imagine that the more advanced techniques you learn the more indepth you need to understand the A&P?What do you think aboiutmy theory? I love the subject so I am often reading related articles etc I live in Essex.

Essence and Lesley - thanks also for the links; I am heading straight to them now. I have looked at the MSMC before as that is an ok travel.

Hi Karen,
welcome! from my perception of what you are saying I would suggest that you have a look at some form of remedial massage course, by doing so you will be able to identify different types of soft tissue dysfunction and therefore be better trained how to deal with them.
I have an issue with "Sports injury " type courses, as I think unless you are working within the sporting arena, they may not be relevant and although they may give you information about specific injuries and treatment protocols, everyone reacts differently to treatment and people I meet who have done this type of course tend to be "clones of the instructor". I find that most injuries cannot be placed neatly in a pigeon holed laballed box.but if you complete either a sports/remedial massage or remedial massage course, you will have all the skills to identify what is happening and plan your treatment as a result of your findings both subjectively and objectively.

Hi there,

I know what you mean by wanting to learn more and more, I did a course with Jing last year and it really opened me up to all different aspects of bodywork, they have a real passion for massage, training and bringing this into your own massage/ bodywork. But then again, there are so many options available, Hot Stones etc, I recently did Balinese Massage training, most of my clients have this now as its just a great treatment to give and receive.
