Is it is ok for children to live with their parents past 18. For the record, I would hope mine wants to back pack Europe the day he graduates high school that he wants to live in the dorm at a great University and experience as much as possible. That his curiosity for life and ability to be self sufficient drive him out of the house and into the world no matter how much her mother will protest.

But is he doesn’t, if he needs a few more years than it is fine with me, and more of a reflection on my in failure to instill these values in him.

But what about you parents? Would you let them live with you, support them financially if need be?

Also, are you relying on your child to take care of you on your old age?.​

I was out the first time at 15. Forced to go back and gone for good the summer after graduating High school.

Looking back on it maybe I should stayed a few more years at home and been a better son to my folks. Instead I was always off in five different directions at once.

Wasted a lot of years chasing my tail so to speak. Really when you think of it family is the most important thing in our lives.

So I see no problem in staying home and nurturing those relationships.

Yes Sir family is indeed the most important thing in our lives. Looks to me that you caught your tail just in time. My two boys are leaving me for their first time at age 23 and they know I will always be there for them.

My son was lucky in that his father and I agreed that travel is the best possible form of education. So we made an effort while he was young to take him places, let him see that the world was much bigger than the small town he lived in. Now he's 20 and in college, and if he has his way he will spend the summer after graduation seeing Asia. We always told him to go see the world while he's young, before he settles into wife and kids...you can always move back home when it's time to settle down, if that's what you want to do.

He lives on-campus now, and he's pretty independent so I know if he ever wanted to move back in, it would be a matter of real necessity. And of course as long as I have a roof over my head so does he...but as I explained to him once, moving back home after school shouldn't be the plan. It should be what happens if the plan doesn't work out.

I'm not planning on him supporting me, but he has assured me he'll be happy to stick me in a really nice old-folks home. :tongue::tongue:

I think mid 20's if fair for someone's kid to leave home. I am in my early 20's and still live with family. Even though I have a good job and make more money than most it is the smartest thing financially for me.

I own 2 town homes but they are rental properties. I get along great with my family so why would I leave. Instead of paying a mortgage every month someone else pays if for me. I guess everyone has different situations but I know financially I will be better off in the future since I sucked it up now and still live at home.

It all depends on his maturity. I would hope that he will want to find his own path by his early 20s. My job is to prepare him as best I can and to let him know that he will always have a home...but he's got to be his own man.

Many young adults stay at home longer these days. Especially if one lives in the city, it's not cheap by any means. I'm 40 and live in my parents basement Muwaaa aa aa aa.

My kid didnt come with a manual. I'm just trying take the best advice from family and friends and hope i don't screw up too much. it's an amazing, and daunting , journey.

My children are welcome to live with me for as long as it takes for them to become established. Good values are being established in them, but this does not reflect a need for immediate independence. With the price of university, I fully expect them to live with me during this time, (if they so choose), and I would much rather this happen than them starting life with a staggering debt. Lets also remember that the price of food, gasoline, food and rent is substantially higher than when I first moved out. My first apartment was about $450/month, now one would be hard pressed to find one for under $1000. When entering the workforce, chances are good they will not be making a great deal of money. So let them live at home until they acquire a car, furniture and have a bit of a disposable income. It will give them a head start I never had.
