Osteopath & chiropractors help plz!

Hi, I know i cant expect a diagnosis etc but any help would be greatly appreciated. In Nov 05 i had a micro-discectomy. Went bk to work (postie) end jan 06. Light duties followed then in may 06 went bk to my cycle duties. If you are screaming why i am now doing the same, as eventually in nov 06 i got medically ret. all this in my forties! My bk pain has come bk but not my leg probs thankfully. Only a few tweaks now & again. My bk tho isnt gud. confusing to me is the fact that i had bk probs wiv my left leg in pain. Now i seem to have bk pain but on the right side & sort of in my bum!. to be honest the bk is worse than b4 my op! Questions are this Do you think i may still be suffering from scar tissue probs (as if i press my scar its tender but its not the main pain)or is there a prob again with my disc? my brother said i must try an osteopath or chiropractor cos i have nothing to lose. However plz accept my apologies with your profession, when i say i dont want to go to someone who may make it worse. its not gud at the mo but i can bear it. I would appreciate any opinions you have , even if you say i am stupid for returning to my job & undoing the surgeons gud work ( as i blame myself anyway!) thanx.

What about asking your GP for an xray - then you could make a decision re treatment once it has been evaluated.
My 'him indoors' has been having back probs for some months, and he eventually cracked and asked for an xray just 2 weeks ago. It appears that he has disc protusion at L2/3 and calcifiedligaments in L4/5 - which are causing the pain in his buttock/hip/thigh. He has spent quite a bit on private osteopathy, which made no difference even though he persevered for about 12 weeks. He has been told by the ortho pod that the best action is now to work on his core muscles, especially his abs, so that they can take the brunt of usual activities.

HI There Kejo - I would suggest that you try a McTImoney Chiropractor or Bowen technique - both very gentle. It is not uncommon for people to report new problems after surgery and sometimes this is due to how your body was moved from trolley to operating table and back again. Another possiblity is that your posture and biomechanics have changed since the op putting additional pressure on the 'good' side....look on the internet for your nearest McT or Bowen people via the professional associations websites. If you cant find them email me and I will find out who your nearest people are.

The fact that you're not getting any leg pain or other leg symptoms suggests that the surgery worked and the disc is not the problem. Typically with lumbardisc injuries the pain is worse in the leg than in the low back. So it's less likely that your current problem is another disc injury.

You were right to get back on your bike and generally 'keep moving' - that's now generally accepted as the best thing for low back problems.

What you may well be experiencing is referred pain to the buttock from one of the small facet joints at the back of the spine, from either the same level (as you will have lost some thickness from the injured disc, bringing the facet joints closer together) or from one of the neighbouring vertebral segments that is straining to compensate.

Advice - choice is yours really - chiropractor or osteopath - I have a preference for that latter as I am one.

Every single day i blame myself for going back to work & 'damaging' my back. My dr truthfully doesnt seem over bothered at my latest pain but always asks about leg pain, so what you say sounds very likely. Its just nice to hear it from someone who knows! My brother is a regular at a gym & has said he will ask around for some good chiropractors/ osteopaths in my area (which is a small village!) so will see what he comes up with. I do feel more positive by reading your remarks. Hopefully sooner rather than later i will make a good recovery. Can you comment on whether these facet joints can be corrected (if thats the word).
