Massage & Reiki

How do you handle permission for Reiki during a massage? Reiki seems to flow from me whenever someone has a need, however I know I need to ask permission regardless. Do you put something on the consent form, ask verbally, do both, or don't mention it unless it is a direct treatment. ???

By virtue of their presence at the massage, they're asking for healing.  By virtue of showing up for a massage with you, they're asking for healing thru you, whatever form you channel.  I used to feel like I needed to specify that Reiki might come thru.  Over time, I've come to see that every client has been grateful, and intruiged by what they've felt with Reiki.  Sometimes, I do also mention during the session, that I intend to send Reiki and that's why my hands might linger in a particular area, if I feel the need.  Often, it's unnecessary, in retrospect.

This morning I am so grateful for the string.  I began my massage therapy internship yesterday.  I have Reiki 1 and it always comes up in my massages (per my classmates.)  Yesterday my first client was amazed at my massage.  She scheduled another apoint and commented to me that she had never experienced healing like that in a massage.  I mentioned to her that I use Reiki.  You know it did not occur to me to ask permission because I am massaging and the Reiki just comes out.  I knew to ask if I was working with an individual and Reiki.  I am deeply grateful to have found this site.

I believe it is imperative to actually ask permission to use energy work of any kind.  If they come to you for Reiki , that , of course, is different.  This is what I have been taught at each and every energy workshop that I have ever attended.  There are often times when clients are not ready for energy work, and it is their right to not recieve (it is not your decision).  As an energy worker you also have to know how to stop the flow yourself.  It is the same as asking permission to do gluteal massage.  You may know they need it, but it is their choice! But at the same time it is fine to ask for the best intentions, or say a silent prayer and to wish only good for the client.  You may be "guided" to do massage in specific areas, which is not the same as doing "energy" work!

It is a excellent idea to inform your clients that you have energetic capabilitys, what ever type that may be.  I feel energy flowing whenever a client needs the work, regardless of whether or not  I intend to give Reiki.  I tell them that they may notice warmth from my hands, but I dont interrupt a massage session unless I intend to focus on a particular area.  You can always go back after the massage is over.  Explaining Reiki is difficult and time consuming, so I have a brochure I hand out.  Questions can always be answered at the next appointment.  It's only fair to warn a client, and it should be mentioned in the consent form.  If the energy is needed, it's going to flow, like it or not.   I'd be interested in knowing how some folks stop it.  If I didn't start it, I can't not give the energy if it's flowing all by itself.  Native Americans call it being a "hollow bone".  I've never had a client object, but I've had quite a few who don't believe in it. They usually come around eventually, even if they only notice a better mood , a headache that is gone, or just a warm feeling all over.Medicineman
