Hi, i have been asked to do a talk on indian head massage, i have never done this, you can anyone give me advise on what to say also how much do you charge for doing this???

Hi Froggy,

firstly, whats your hourly rate? £25 per hour - ish for an hour's talk. Perhaps offer a discount if they book you for 2 hours.

to do with the talk:

Introduce yourself, who are you, what you are qualfied in, where you can be found (but keep it brief and don't seem as if you are doing the big sell)

firstly I talk about the history and development of IHM to include the culture, ie baby massage, family sessions, male grooming, female grooming, how it came to the IHM.

secondly, what the massage consists of ie upper back, shoulders, etc, etc.

thirdly, benefits and contra-indications.

fourthly, preparation, ie creating an ambience, peace and quiet, have oil if using, wash hands, play music.

fifthly, a demo or get the audience into pairs and get them to copy you.

sixly, Q & A

seventhly, where you can be found, ie here's my business card, I am available, etc.

I am doing a demo and talk for my local fire station on thursday night to 11 firefighters. I am doing it for free. They did ask me how much I charge but I thought this may put them off charging for this after all I want their business so thought doing it for Free would be an incentive for more business. I am doing Reflexology Indian Head Massage and Holistic Facials.
It is up to the individual I think on how much to charge or whether to charge at all. I did initially think about charging but decided against it. If it becomes a regular thing I may start charging just to cover petrol as a one off of say £10 but we are all different and as long as you get out of it what you want and the clients like the treatments too both are winners!

great advice........... I do believe that a demo with audience participation works well.

what you charge for your 'talk' is certainly up to you.......... but when I did a talk for the Countrywomen's Group recently I told them I charge £20 for local venue ........... they were very pleased and said that some people charge as much as £50!! so go with how you feel about it. remember that you may get no clients from your talk.............. and your time is precious too.

just to add to what Daisychain says....... besides business cards I also have my leaflets available....... take plenty ........ if everyone goes home with a leaflet to read there is a better chance of them booking with you

I give out discount vouchers at the end of my talk ...... 20% off price of first treatment.... this is a good incentive for your 'listeners' to come for a treatment. everyone wants to feel that they are getting a bargain.

lastly........ I take my diary/appointment book with me but keep it in my bag until someone asks.... that way you don't look 'pushy'

This has been an interesting thread, and it's something I should look into myself.....

Out of interest, when doing the demo part of the talk, do you talk to the audience during the demo? If so, what do you say and how much detail do you go into, and does it not distract you from what you are doing?!

I explain what I am doing during the demo and quietly check with the receiver that they are okay. I don't charge but at the last one I did to a Townswomens group they insisted on giving me £20.

So, TJG, back to these 11 firefighters..... hopefully not all women?? Do you need some help???

I gave a 2.5 hour talk, quick lesson to students at a local uni - to help them with exam stress. My charge worked out at aound £25/hour and that included petrol/parking costs. I also talked to an 'A' level class about complementary therapies, but there was no payment for that. I think you've just got to play it by ear as to whether you charge or not.
