Death threats can be funny too!

Because of my position in SPOC, I've received a couple of generic death threats since the decision came down. They're not directed at me specifically, mostly along the lines of "you're a dirty immoral hooker and you'll die of AIDS as part of God's vengeance" kind of thing. I forwarded them to the cops, and didn't think anything more of it - no sense losing sleep over something you can't control. :neutral:

But I got one last week that was actually pretty funny, and thought I'd share it with the rest of you:

How do you respond to something like that without falling over in laughter? :

I guess I think too highly of myself, I figured my life would be worth waaaaay more than nine thousand dollars... :angel:

During the past week, municipal council candidates in various cities through southern Ontario have received similar death threat / extortion emails.

But they were only being asked to cough up $3800.

Clearly a change of profession would make them more valuable members of society.

Well for starters anyone with any security training as you call it would take even the most ludicrous threat somewhat seriously.

Sorry guys, I've been in exam-writing hell for the last few days, so I'm only getting to this now. I've been assured by the cops that there's no reason to be concerned about this particular threat, and it's not even directed at me specifically. This isn't even a "death threat" per se, it's a combination of Nigerian-style spam and a half-hearted attept at extortion.

So, nothing to fear from this remarkably foolish individual - the cops have dealt with him already, and I'm sure he's not going to be dumb enough to try anything like this again. :great:





How else should I respond to death threats, other than with laughter? Should I stop doing what I'm doing with SPOC? Run away and hide? Or maybe sit in the corner crying, afraid to answer the phone or the door?

Fuck that, I don't get scared that easily, and anyone who tries to make good on a threat will find out I'm not as easy a target as they might suspect. If they meant it as a genuine threat, then I hope they read it when I posted it. As long as it doesn't compromise the investigation, I'll happily post it publicly to show them just how seriously I take their threat to be.

If they're trying to intimidate me to stop me from doing what I'm doing, what better way to show them how badly they've failed in their goal? Sure, I do my due diligence - send the threats to the cops, keep my wits about me, ensure my security fallbacks are in place, etc - but if I let it affect me any more than that, then they've succeeded in their goal, and I've failed in mine.



Public figure or otherwise, I'll never take any options off the table when it comes to protecting myself. I can't always take the initiative, but take my word for it, I leave nothing to chance when it comes to my safety and security.
