It’s time to open up the world before it cannot recover. Politicians and health officials need to take the blinders off and realize that economic suicide will kill far more than a virus.

I thought this virus was just the flu and fake news and they just want to get us all microchip vaccination?

Interesting articles!!
I have to say... my mind has been all over this. I was all for self isolation and was extremely concerned about the spread.. however in the last week I have been thinking about this

First off just last week Kenny suggested in the models we would have an Alberta over 800,000 positive cases. When I heard that I thought the numbers were actually staggering and I couldn’t figure out how we could possibly have this many positive people. One week later we are not even remotely close to these numbers.

my biggest concern is truly the impact on the economy and the mental stability of people moving forward. There will be limited support for people that are and will
Suffer from depression
I can see divorce rates rise after this.. leave more financial hardship and essentially make the kids suffer ..... we are making our future generations the real losers

I have been a very good person and totally self isolated and only have gone out for walks on a daily basis. There’s been days where I simply broke down and cried as I stared at my computer screen looking at coronavirus numbers .....I was truly scared for me and my loved ones.

we have had to make some serious financial decisions within my company. We had to temporarily off 20% of our workers. The rest of us have rollback and wages and hours.

my kids are getting by but I can tell you it’s a real struggle that they can’t see their friends on a daily basis. I know for my daughter in particular who is extremely social I can see a little part of her dying. This makes me very very sad as I can’t do anything about this

I have really been pondering over the last few days how the hell are we going to recover from this on a global stage economically. It’s not just the lost salaries... it’s the depression, increase in domestic violence, increases in divorce......There has been so many lives destroyed by this COVID-19.

Recently it seems that we are trying to save our seniors while the middle age and younger will suffer ... for decades

Could it be the cure is worse than the cause?!

rant over...

The number of cases certainly makes one wonder if all the hype is really necessary. Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't want anyone to lose a loved one from this curse or any other for that matter.

My confusion (I will call it that), is how governments can spend money that really isn't there to pay the people, business owners and others who are in need. In need because the government has created this themselves by closing down the economy.

While I understand the fear of a new sickness with no cure, which has potentially a death sentence with it, I start to wonder how many people die in comparison from cancer. I don't see government spending billions to help that area of population by giving them money to pay for treatments, or even replace income lost because work is no longer an option.

I don't know the numbers, but I think I would be safe to say cancer out numbers the Cvoid epidemic by a long shot.

And that is just one example. If someone can answer this with a rational explanation that would be nice

For those who's families are affected by a disease with no cure, including this virus, may God be with you.

I totally understand what you are saying!

looking up this number.... from the Canadian Cancer Society website
Estimate 225,800 new cases of cancer and 83,300 deaths from cancer will incur in Canada in 2020

cancer is the leading cause of death in Canada and responsible for 30% of all deaths

According to covid world numbers.. Canada has 1200 deaths due to covid.

Could it be the cure is worse than the cause?

That sounds so Trump like and we all know he only has the best interests of the public at heart.

I expect that in New York and Chicago where they are stacking the dead like cord wood in trailers, they are not feeling quite the same. This has attacked every demographic and it would be much worse if the world had not stepped in to slow it. This hasn't just affected seniors, but frankly it's a bit disturbing to hear people like yourself suggest that seniors are disposable and to let them die so younger people can keep working and keep their toys. Frankly, with the international price of oil right now, Alberta would have been devastated regardless of the effects of the virus. And even those dreaded nasty left wing NDPers can't be blamed. Just because Alberta has stepped in to slow the spread of the virus by social distancing does not mean that it is over. Far from it. I was supposed to be in Asia right now, but as you can see every country in the world has been locked down so citizens can not travel internationally or even domestically. Lets see how Florida and other states do in the next few weeks as they begin to open their beaches and the streets. It didn't go so well for them when they ignored spring breakers. Even senior business leaders are telling the Trump and politicians to take it slow and do it right.

I along with about 100 of my co workers lost our jobs here a few weeks ago. More than that were terminated in our Calgary location and similar numbers have been let go in each of our Canadian and American locations. Following that, all but a few senior managers have been terminated in each location as well. That translates into more than 80% of our global corporate workforce. Given the conditions we were working in which required close contact with others, I would not return to work right now anyway. I'll wait until the second wave, which we know will be coming, has passed.

In the mean time, I have been using the time to clean years of crap out of my basement. The more crap that goes out the door the less depressed I am. And to make it even sweeter, I have been using my former employer's dumpsters to get rid of it. Hell they aren't using them right now anyway.

I can relate to all sides of the argument but lean to the safety side.

Deepbrown, I can relate to your situation, almost like you were watching me live. Isolation, Family and financial concerns, four elderly parents, and being the pillar of strength, is a mental gong show........(inside my head)

Bob, I feel your concern as well. My only comment would be that Cancer. and this in not all cases, does not put an immediate strain on the healthcare facilities like COVID. I have a few friends on the healthcare side and. As much as we are not seeing the Italy/New York pounding, they say it is like nothing they have seen.
I also find it hard to believe that a government, corrupt or good, would willingly put a country under their care through the economic and financial ringer with the expectation of stronger control after, or better numbers in the poles.

The only thing I’m absolutely sure about is that not getting a massage is, for me, a very first world problem. Am I needing one? Without a doubt. Am I more concerned about many other pressing issues? Yup.

Stay safe and healthy all.

My rant.
You need to read about the Spanish Flu. It was the second of three waves of H1N1, and the most devestating. The actual fatality number is not truly known but 50 million seems to be the most mentioned number. This virus took more lives than the war itself and humankind took a lesson from that horrific experience. The spread of the virus was due to soldiers coming home from the war, international travel. Our technology today is what has helped slow the spread through communication, social media, our medical systems and our resources to provide hospitals with personal protection equipment, etc. This virus could have done the same damage as the Spanish Flu if it came upon us back in those early days. So staying home with loved ones, governments going into debt to help the commoners isn't to big a price to pay versus the devestation that could happen if nothing, or not enough was done. We'll get through this and just like other horrible events, eg 9/11, the world will not be the same.
My rant is over.

Its a strange time, unfortunately this situation is unprecedented. I have seen the comparisons to cancer and coronary relate deaths, sure the death numbers are bigger but neither has the potential to spread like wildfire.
Although the numbers of Covid deaths might appear low in comparison I suspect that the reason for that to a degree is the current measures in place. I don't know how many comments I have seen on line praising the approach in Sweden, yet now the confirmed cases in Sweden are exploding and they are scrambling.

Yes the economy is critical, however simple lifting the current shut down restrictions is not going to fire up the economy, that is going to take a considerable amount of time. If the restrictions were lifted tomorrow how many people are going to attend a concert, a movie theatre, a sporting event, or take a cruise holiday. How many will be able to afford a new car, tv's , bigger home, or any large discretionary purchase after the Covid shutdown and the resulting drain on their personal finances. People will have maxed out credit cards and lines of credit for some time. As well deferred mortgage, rent, taxes, utilities, etc., will come due

This situation will result in a lot of permanent changes, people were already reducing restaurant visits in favor of home delivery, Covid isolation will only accelerate that trend. And the list goes on

Many businesses that were shut down will probably never recover, however for some of them that might not be a bad thing. Often business owners don't know when to pull the plug on a failing business, Covid will probably make that decision for them. Employers in many cases will come to the realization that there are other less costly ways to conduct business, some will require fewer employees or maintain a work from home with fewer hours.

I don't have a crystal ball, but I am certain that after this is over it won't simplty be a case of picking up where we left off, its going to be a brand new economic reality for may people

By no means am I saying seniors are disposable.... if that’s what you read between the lines.. then my apologies.
As for Trump... well...he is an unstable human being... and unfit for what he is doing.( much different topic).

let me rephrase this.

It appears to me we are well below the initial models presented to Alberta last week. This is fantastic news.!!!!But I know Alberta is only one speck of sand in the global economy.

Also I’m sure Kenney and Dr. Hinshaw must and will be extremely cautious....And I totally respect that. I

But I’m sure when they re-look at the data after this week the model will look much different. I don’t know how you start to bring people back

I’m not a Kenney fan... but don’t envy his job right now. Weigh the pandemic against massive unemployment. Relaunching the province will be his most difficult decision in his lifetime.

al I’m saying.. from the models from last week....Alberta is well ahead of the curve.... that’s a huge positive!

im sorry for your loss of job. We lost jobs and had wage cut backs in this house too.

I think covid has affected me... I hate politics and I’m talking about this. I’m even brought up extremely controversial topics like responding to this thread.... that’s not me!!! Lol

stay safe and god bless

All awesome opinions. My point is we need to have economic professionals, scientists, and weigh into this to this. Politicians need to act on advice from unbiased groups. And yes life verses death is part of the equation sad to say but true. However people leading the charge are under oath to save lives. There is more to the equation. More input is required.

I work with numbers in my job therefore I want real numbers not stats displayed to back opinion. Dead from Virus/population split into demographics and then split further into underlying health issues.

I do not want “models” as they admittedly use assumption. That is not fact. I do not care how many are tested compared to infected or dead. That does not represent the population. I want honesty and unbiased statistics. At this point we have a population under house arrested yet hide behind human rights not divulging information. This information is critical to making informed decisions affecting others.

I also would like to know if there is a connection between the military games in Wuhan and theory this hopped off a dead animal 2 weeks after. 10,000 athletes and over 100 countries in attendance. Read about the number of cases of people tested in December on who neither tested positive for influenza A or B, yet had all the symptoms. I was one of those told by my doctor “its a respiratory infection.”

My thoughts, we need to completely re-think the shoddy conditions of Care Centres and the terrible conditions that residents have to live in, covid or no covid. This is the aspect of socialism I prescribe to. The rest of us, let's get back to work. Work smart, wash hands, not shake hands, use masks in Public transit, but back to living. For those with health concerns, work out individual plans with business. And call your MP and MLA and voice your opinion.

I have the same questions, the military games or the Hong Kong riots, maybe live animal markets? I got so sick late December and didn't recover till third week of January. It hit hard n fast, with major congestion and a fever with some sweats. Oh ya, anything that I may have hurt in my years of growing up playing sports hurt like hell!! Same symptoms as people describe but no where near as severe. I told a friend that whatever I caught it is serious. Have had pneumonia years back and this felt it could easily escalate into pneumonia.

Than I start talking to other people in January, and they said they had the same sort of thing. Some worse, some not so much. I keep myself in pretty good shape and take care of myself, but I know if I was a smoker or had lung issues that could have been game over. Drank lots of tea, took Tylenol and tried to keep moving by getting up and walking around the house. My point is that the virus was here in Canada by December.

One thing that surprised me and disappointed me is that they didn't lockdown the Senior care centers much quicker. That virus is just creating havoc in these places. Loves "hosts" that are compromised or have underlying issues.

What scares people is the concept that this is a "new" virus and the fact that people can be asymptomatic...freaks me out!

This so called epidemic has had a total infringement on our civil liberties. Sure I agree that there are more fatalities with the covid 19 outbreak then the normal flu season, but 300,000-500,000 die just from influenza every year and no one ever calls that an epidemic. Is a total shut down worth the financial pain regular people are suffering from now, because they can’t pay their rent, car loans, mortgages and so on.

Here in Alberta 48 deaths out of 4.4 million people and 21 were from the same extended care facility. There needs to be a balance for everybody and I’m not sure that most governments in the world have that in their calculations.
Just like Bob said cancer and heart disease kills more people then this flu will ever reach. No one actually knows if it will disappear just like SARS did, but cancer will be a bitch for years to come and it doesn’t discriminate between old or young. Trust me I know since my youngest sister died from it at an early age and left two young children on their own and I have two more friends waiting for their last breath but are kept alive with chemo and other experimental drugs.
It’s never easy to accept death but it’s part of our lives and these draconian measures that are being taken are going to cause healthy people to also get sick and die from depression and suicide.

In my view stay home if you’re afraid of catching covid but when 96% are mild cases, I’m not afraid and want freedom not government to tell me how to live my life cause this is not living.
By the way, I’m a senior
Cheers and hopefully this thing is just seasonal and will disappear once summer is here.

Unfortunately Alberta averages 74 deaths per day.

As for New York with 8.3 million people the viral load and urban density is a huge impact. 4 million subway rides per day, combined with 10% of the population diabetic, 40% obese, 14% smokers any metropolis in the US is a perfect place for this virus to raise hell. Isolation and flattening the curve in Canada is to lower the ICU rate and flooding of hospitals. Unfortunately the rush to hospitals is mainly people in fear looking for tests and answers. The success rate of people moved into ICU care is very low and on an average die within a 4 - 8 day period. So if you fall into a category of vulnerable protect yourself because if your in that category your in for a fight. The good news for elderly is if your healthy you have a 99% survival rate providing your exposure to to virus is relatively low.

Now speculate if this virus has been moving in pockets since December. Are the senior Homes really the first infected or the final?

I suppose this is not an issue for people that can afford massages.
There is and will be a huge impact on our social life because of this shut down.
just ask yourself how people that live pay check to pay check are feeling right now and are surviving.
Don’t count those people out and include them in your scenario.

Hey Toast. What kind of idiot compares junk food to a deadly virus. Don't bother responding because I just put you ignorant ass on ignore.
For how often he posts comments, you don't really need to put him on ignore.
And although, from time to time, he comments about providers....I have never actually seen a review.
