i had a sports massage yesterday to help with runners knee. which is due to tightness in my hip and my IT band. when will i feel the effects, when will the pain subside? is it 1 or 2 days after the massage?

It should be immediately. Sports massages are designed to loosen muscles and increase the blood flow, however for many muscles it doesn't work, and is more of a mental thing (if you think it helps then it does help)

You should stretch often and follow this procedure

    Rest
    Ice
    Compression
    Elevation
Referral - only if the pain persists

    hope it gets better =]

Rest works with me, ice, compression and elevation only helps to recover faster but doesn't make much difference.

Try 30-min sessions of Acupuncture. maybe 2-3 sessions in span of 10 days. You should notice a major improvement.
