Mushroom Stems and Communism

My wife told me that when she was growing up under Communism, there was no such thing as mushroom heads. Only the mushroom stems were available. Not until she was 10 years old, did she first see and taste a mushroom head. Not until Mao died and Deng Xiao Ping came to rule did the Chinese people have the luxury of eating Mushroom heads, not just the stem.

Just another example of how Communism makes people poor and capitalism gives people more.

Shanghai back then and even today, doesn't have nature trails and parkland like we have here. In fact, in China, you can get arrested for walking on grass instead of the sidewalk.

You have no idea how hard it is to acquire things under a communist dictatorship. Everything had to be approved by the government and if you owned anything that wasn't approved - even a pot with mushrooms growing in it - you could be arrested for doing so.

Seriously, I have friends who's parents lived under the communist regime. They lost everything under that regime, their money, property, businesses. Regular books had to be sanctioned and approved by the govt. My buddy's cousin, until 10 or 15 yrs ago from main land china, during a discussion did not believe that man went to the moon. Called it western propaganda. Now she realized how suppressed they have been by the communist govt.
China in the last 5 year have gotten much better, even the chicks are better looking.
